Born in 1974 in North Vancouver, Mike Mitchell grew up all over the Lower Mainland. He graduated from John Oliver High School in 1993 where he was part of the schools only provincial football team. Mike married his wife Rachel and they now have three children, a boy and two girls.
Mike started at BC Outdoors magazine in a sales position and after two years, he became editor of the magazine in 2006. As editor, his first duty was to salvage the Backroads Tour, which ran for three years at twenty-six different Toyota dealerships throughout BC. He also put together the Learning With the Pros series with Phil Rowley, which ran for three years. He was integral in starting what is now an annual BC Outdoors Derby at Shearwater. This was also the site where the idea of a television show was planted by our Mark Delaney of Kingfisher boats.
The show was a quick success and is now going into a fourth season on the World Fishing Network among others. Mike’s fans herald the show for its informative and entertainment value. Mike has a quick wit and draws out a chemistry with his many guest hosts. Mike says, “The show has been a great challenge and a great pleasure; I learn something new on every episode.“
Mike’s true love is down rigging for salmon on the coast. Some of his favourite locations to fish are at Shearwater Resort & Marina and near Port Hardy. After four seasons next to expert fly-fisher, Brian Chan, Mike has honed this skill and enjoys early spring and late fall fisheries in the Interior.
Mike is also Executive Producer of Sportfishing Adventures, hosted by professional athletes Brendan Morrison and Chris Burns. This show has an exciting format with celebrity names and has matched the success of BC Outdoors Sport Fishing.
Mike Mitchell describes himself as a husband, father, friend, editor, producer, show host and ever-grateful man for all that brought him to this point. He says, “I’m looking forward to the next great adventure in the great BC outdoors.”
