Is Recreational Fishing Being Banned?

Posted On March 12, 2010

Fishing and conservation websites across the US lit up this week with discussion, comments, and arguments that were ignited by a recent editorial article. The article spoke of the Obama Administration's Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force and their plan for marine spatial planning. Anglers are concerned that the task force could eventually end angling all together, and at the very least cause a significant loss of income to the recreational fishing industry.

The public comment period has ended, and angler groups such as the Recreational Fishing Alliance feel that the NOAA and the task force has ignored their recommendations. They go as far as to accuse the task force of circumventing established legislation to see that key elements of the Oceans 21 bill enforced. "The goal of the key players in the process, specifically the Pew Environment Group and its minions, is to attempt to implement through Executive Order what they had failed to accomplish through the legislative process," said Jim Donofrio, RFA Executive Director.
