According to recent tests, bighead and silver carp have made it past electronic barriers in Chicago, Illinois. The barriers were the last line of defense keeping the species from entering the Great Lakes. These fish are extremely prolific and can grow over 4' long. The impacts on other species in the Great Lakes could be severe. In addition, they often jump out of the water when spooked by a boat, which has caused a lot of injuries to boaters. While the prospect of extreme aerial bowfishing does sound fun, the negative impact on the fisheries and recreational boating is nothing to look forward to. After entering Lake Michigan it may be impossible to stop them from spreading through the rest of the great lakes.
