Ice Fishing

Posted On February 14, 2012
Ice fishing in the North country is not for the weak of heart. You must endure some of winters coldest winds, snow ,ice, sleet and sometimes rain. We use live bait most of the time when fishing for pike, lakers or Walleye. When fishing for perch we use homemade bibbits tiny jigs hand painted in colors not sold in stores and they catch fish. We hit most of the bays in our area where the ice is thickest. Remember there is no such thing as safe ice so be sure to sound the ice or drill test holes if in doubt. Also remember to use creepers on your feet to prevent unwanted falls and keep a set of hand spikes somewhere above your waist in case you go through the ice. If you should break through don't panic(yeah I know easier said then done) don't thrash around make your way to the edge of the hole and use the hand spikes to set into the ice shelf at the same time swim kick with all your might while pulling on the spikes onto the ice shelf. Once out don't stand up keep flat on your belly pulling yourself with the spikes until well clear of the hole and presto you just saved your life good job now get dry and warm as soon as you can.

We stay warm by having a campfire in a barrel so nothing goes in the water later. Plus we fire up the coleman stove for a fresh lunch or Venison steaks yummy.

Fishing Aruba

Took a charter while in Aruba went fishing. Caught a few fish nothing to brag about but we had fun and it helped pass the winter blues not enough to hold me over until the ice melts though. Ice fishing this year is a bust with warm temps and constant changing of ice conditions. Come on springtime!

Hitting the Pike

Now that the summer heat is here the Pike are hiding under the willow trees along the banks.  Took the 12 footer out Sunday and thru a live minnow under every willow tree and came up with some nice Pike. Mostly 4-5 pounders and one nice 38"er. And to my surprise one 5lb largemouth.
