Prespawn Lure Choices

Posted On February 01, 2012
Late winter and early spring signify that change will soon be making its way to the lake. Nature tells the bass this often before fishermen have a clue to the changes taking place daily as the days become longer and the water becomes warmer. In this post let us take a look at some of the most productive lures for prespawn fishing from February on through spring.

Suspending jerkbaits are among one of the most popular prespawn lures. A go to for many anglers for the late winter conditions and following the seasonal cold fronts that will come and go until spring as the bass move from deep water to shallow water.

A crankbaits is also on many anglers list of top prespawn lures. The action of these lures is difficult to beat when targeting prespawn bass that are moving to shallow cover such as rocks and submerged timber. The lures ability to bounce and bump the cover knocking on the bass’ door is a great way to get them to the boat.

The Jig is the next lure to mention. Many bass gurus sweat by this versatile bait for the emerging lethargic prespawn bass. As the water warms the bass move and jigs are versatile for deep water to shallow water. They are excellent crawfish and creature imitation baits and bass can not resist the slow moving crawfish in late winter and early spring.

And lastly the spinnerbait. One of the top selling lures in modern bass fishing. The bait fish imitation lure can be fished at any depth and blade combinations can be adapted quickly to suit the mood of the bass and the angler. These baits are great search baits during the prespawn season and the speed can be varied greatly to entice the finicky bass.

An angler armed with only these four baits can be very successful during the prespawn. The classic collection listed here has been the choice of many competition anglers and has been proven time and time again with tournament wins. The best thing an angler can take fishing with him is confidence. And these lures will give you just that.

Happy Fishing!

Keepin' it real - Bass Fishing Tip of the Day

Artificial lures are supposed to imitate a baitfish and other forage. They need to look like an easy meal to a Bass or at least resemble competition from a smaller predator. A realistic presentation mimicking these traits is what gets the bass to strike. A good tips is to watch the bait fish while you’re on the water and learn from ol’ mom nature.
