Fishing Memories

Posted On October 13, 2011
I was going through some the Ambassador posts and was inspired by Rick Clark’s post about taking a trip down memory lane.

My Dad grew up in Port Elgin and spent almost all of his spare time on the water and it was a passion he passed onto my sisters and I. Dad taught me how to fish on Rice Lake while visiting my Uncle Bob and Aunt Sandy when I was about 2 or 3. I had a cute little Mickey Mouse fishing rod rigged with a bobber and worm and I spent the day hauling fish out of the lake. I can’t remember a summer since then where we didn’t spend at least a week camping and fishing.

There are so many memories from that one lake:

 * I watched my Dad’s best friend put one foot into the boat and do the splits as the boat went one direction and the floating dock went in the other.

* It was the place where I was literally hooked on fishing; my sister tried to make a cast but before she could complete her cast she hooked into me, I still have the scar on my hand.

* I learned how to swear rather colourfully when my Uncle dropped his first cell phone into the lake (it was one of those huge bricks from way back when cell phones were new)

* A more recent memory is camping with my boyfriend and convincing him to go out on the water with me on the Canada Day long weekend. He hadn’t been fishing since he was a kid with his late Grandfather. You should have seen his face when he thought he had caught a monster fishing from the pier near the damn unfortunately he was snagged but it made him determined to get out as much as possible to catch something other than my shoe.

*Virginia, (my youngest sister) was the only one my Dad could convince to go ice fishing but she always comes back with these hilarious stories of Dad and our Uncle falling on the ice

I’m interested to hear about more stories and memories you might have. Would you leave me a comment below?
