First Bass From Yak

Posted On February 05, 2012
Took my 'new to me' kayak out yesterday for some fishing. Caught not only my first bass from a kayak, but my first fish EVER from a kayak. In fact, it was my first time ever fishing from a yak.

I caught it on a jig with a rubber trailer around some submerged trees. I had the jig sitting on the bottom as I was moving the yak into position. I didn't feel the hit, it was VERY subtle and just felt different. I didn't have a scale on me to weigh it but I estimate it around 2 to 3 pounds.  Could only fish for about an hour and 45 minutes as it was getting chilly. Now I can't wait for the warm weather!

Kayak Fishing

Went out last Saturday afternoon with the kayak for a couple of hours and got 3 large mouth bass. One under a pound, one a pound and a 2 pounder. OK, here is the story on the bleeding 2 pounder...I took the hook out, took the picture and released it. As I was paddling away I heard a noise and thought it was a bass surfacing so I turned around. I saw the bass I just released floating on

Homemade Flies

Last winter I got a fly tying kit from Wapsi and spent a lot of the winter tying flies from the patterns offered. I tried them a couple of times over the winter with no success. After I tied about 15 or so flies I decided to try making my own fly.  As an avid bass angler I decided to make a few popper flies for bass fishing on the fly rod. I got a few pieces of balsa wood from a

In addition to all the gear, tackle and bait needed for a day of fishing, other items should include; water, juice or other drink,

Trout Opening Day 2012

For my friend Eddie and I the past 10 years or so, Opening Day of trout fishing meant lake fishing as the rivers and streams were too high and too fast due to all the snow and rain during the fall and winter. While I like lake fishing, there is nothing quite like a day of wading in a stream fishing for trout. After the very mild winter we had I knew for sure we would be able to get into
