2nd annual Ian McMurchy Award presented at the SHOT Show

Posted On January 19, 2011
The second annual Ian McMurchy Award, launched last year in memory of the late Canadian outdoor writer and photographer Ian McMurchy, was presented yesterday to Outdoor Life magazine’s hunting editor, Andrew McKean.

Awarded to the outdoor communicator who best follows McMurchy’s example of educating readers and helping them better enjoy hunting, the honour was conceived by Nikon Sport Optics, for whom McMurchy served as a member of the pro staff.

“I’m flattered to have my name associated with that of Ian McMurchy. Ian was a hero to me: a talented writer, a remarkable rifleman, a working biologist and a lifelong educator, teaching people about wild places and the animals that live there,” McKean said in accepting the award at the annual SHOT Show in Las Vegas. “I’m happy that Nikon is keeping Ian’s memory alive with this award, and I’m proud to join what I expect will be a long roster of worthy recipients.”

Last year, the inaugural award went to Scott Olmsted, editor of the National Rifle Association’s American Hunter magazine.

An accomplished marksman, firearms expert and hunter, McMurchy passed away in December 2008 after battling vasculitis. One of his final articles was for Outdoor Canada, a primer for hunters considering a big-game safari in Africa. Click here to read it.
