Top 5 Fishing Hot Spots in South Texas

Posted On February 01, 2012
Alright, my top five fishing locations in South Texas are based on catfishing, and here they are from 5 to 1 (1 being the best).
Number 5 is Lake Placid (Yes in South Texas). Lake Placid is on the Guadalupe River and is not much more than a wide spot in the river caused by a dam. Placid has all the main players, Blue cats, Channel cats, and Flathead cats, but it also has those scaly fish. It is away from major suburbia and is very scenic. My best catch on Lake Placid was about an 8 lb blue cat, too bad it was during a flathead only tournament.

Number 4 is Victor Braunig Lake. This is one of our “local” Lakes, about 30 minutes from the house. It is a small power plant cooling lake. It has a good Channel Cat population and I have to rank it high since I have the current lake record channel cat!  Since it is kept warm and has the proper mineral base, it is stocked with Red Fish. Yup, those coastal fish that everyone goes crazy about. We don’t have to go to the coast to catch a Red. It is also stocked with Hybrid Stripers. So this lake has a good verity of fish.

Number 3 is Lake Dunlap, like number 5, Lake Placid; Dunlap is on the Guadalupe River and is a wide spot in the river due to a dam. This lake has a very good population of Blue, Channel, and Flathead Catfish. It also has a health scaly fish population. I know several people who have pulled 30+ pound cats out of this lake.

Number 2 is Calaveras Lake. Calaveras is number 4 Victor Braunig Lake’s big brother. Like Braunig, Calaveras (Cally to the locals) is a power plant cooling lake but it is bigger than Braunig and has a good Blue cat population. It also has Reds and Hybrids stocked. So what makes it number 2? Well for the catfish anglers, you have to opportunity to hunt big blues (for the area) in the 10 – 30 pound range, or you can catch your limit of Channel cats (25) in just a couple hours to have a great fish fry. When I take a friend or family member out that likes catching better than fishing, I take them to Cally and we do some slip corking for Channel cats!

That leaves number 1, Choke Canyon Reservoir. Choke is a beautiful lake located about an hour south of San Antonio, Texas. It is very wild; meaning the chance to view the wildlife is great. On any give trip to Choke you will see deer, hogs, turkey, and gators. Choke is known as an excellent Bass lake and also has a good population of Crappie. It also hold a good population of all three types of catfish (Blues, Channel, and Flatheads). I have caught my biggest blue and flathead on Choke, it happened to be on the same day and during a tournament! Needless to say we won the tournament and I now hold the Lake record Flathead. So that is my top five for now, if my mood changes, the order could change too. But, a trip to any one of these lakes would make for a good day on the water.

Ice Fishing In South Texas

Our next challenge is to discuss ice fishing. Ok, here in South Texas the closest we come to ice fishing is if you have some ice in your drink while fishing. Alright, to be honest, I have had ice on the floor of the boat while fishing because it does dip below freezing now and then, but our water ways do not freeze up in the winter. Many Texans put away the fishing gear in the late fall and get
