Let's Talk "Alabama Rig"

Posted On January 22, 2012
Last weekend I had the opportunity to spend 2 days at the Detroit Ultimate Fishing Show and one of the big "buzzes" in the show was this "automatic Bass catching machine" known as the Alabama Rig. I'm sure many of you have read and know what this rig looks like, but in case you don't it is a simple Jig head with 3-5 wire leaders stemming from it, giving you the options to run 5 baits at the same time replicating a school of fish, "Bass cannot resist it" a pro said! One of the reasons for the buzz was the question, "Will this be permitted in Bass Tournaments?", "Is there an unfair advantage?", these are questions I would like your opinion on. 2 days ago BASS Federation has made the decision to NOT allow Alabama Rigs in their Elite Series (very much so to my satisfaction), but I personally think that the use of this rig in tournament fishing will restrain learning and knowledge on what it takes to track and capture a trophy Bass. If you are out with your friends and family, maybe someone that is not as fishing inclined as you and just wants to catch a fish (we all know it has happened to us at least once), this will be an awesome and fun rig to use, but in tournament fishing I believe the "One-Line, One-Hook" philosophy should take place...

I have been fishing since I was a young kid, instructed by my father in Brazil. I grew up learning how to understand and seek different fish species and look forward to passing this knowledge onto the fishing community. I also believe that you can never stop learning about fishing, I look to grow and better myself as an angler.
