What a Fall on Simcoe

Taro Murata and Mark Kulik with an average Lake Simcoe Fall smallmouth.

Well, it's been a really busy summer and with fall upon us, I slowed down enough to do some smallmouth fishing on Simcoe. I have been working on a new bait for several weeks now, and have been able to perfect it recently. I fished with my good friends Taro Murato and Jacob Watters, on a windy day in early October. We caught easily 50 fish ranging from 3-5 1/2 pounds! Taro decided to try my new wackey leech for the first time, and after catching three fat smallies in a row, it won't be his last! Jacob tagged into some dukers on a Strike-King burner spinnerbait. It's always fun getting those big fish on blades - the smile on Jacob's face was priceless! As for me, I worked on a new design - basically a Slammer with a swimming action. The smallies were all over it!

The Barrie Bassmasters had an open tournament in Mid-October with a 4 fish limit. The fish brought in are tagged and studied by biology personel from Queens Univerity. In this one I fished with my good friend Bill Clarke. We had a fun day and caught several nice smallmouth, finishing in 5th place with 19.15 lbs for 4 bass.

The big story on Simcoe was this past weekend when we witnessed an awesome moment at the Bass Pro Shops Lake Simcoe Open. The team of Mark Moran and Joe Muszynski brought in a 5 fish limit that shattered the Canadian tournament record - 31.55 lbs! Big fish was weighed in by another team and weighed a whopping 8.10 lbs! What a monster! I fished the event with my good freind Joe Cutajar. We had an awesome day weighing in 27 lbs - all caught on the new proto-type bait. We managed 3-6lb fish, but couldn't upgrade two high 4's despite catching approximetly 20 fish! Amazing fishery when 5 lber's aren't big enough! I was happy with our top-10 finish especially when you look at the feild of high-caliber anglers! I look forward to more fishing this fall as I'm still taking guided trips at a reduced fall rate, as well as 2 contest winners from the Kawartha Anglers website. I also look forward to taking my two boys Trevor 11 and Bradley 9 out for some big-fish catch and release fun!

Until next time - keep slammin 'em - please remember catch and release for our children!
