Fishing With My Significant Other In High Water

Posted On January 18, 2012
Over the years I have learned that most people don’t enjoy walking ten miles along a river during low water. When the water is gin clear and fishing is tough. You have to be a certain type of fisherman. Obsessive! My friends know me well and always ask. "How good it?" and if it’s not fantastic or awesome most are not willing to go. So I always ask my friends to rate there fishing passion from one to ten. When I asked my wife (Jen) what number she would rate herself as, she gave me the number six. I’m a ten, but I want to be an eleven. Big Surprise!
I introduced Jen to fishing when we first met. She has been trying to catch a steelhead for the last few years. I have always caught a few when we go out, but she has been having a had time landing one and has been feeling a little discouraged. I would always tell her she was in training and one day she would catch one. I spoiled her a few years ago on Muskie and Bass. Since then she expects the best from me. This fall there was a lot of rain along the Lake Huron Tributaries. Water was busting the banks everywhere. When the water finally started coming down I informed Jen that now was the time. Jen was a little skeptical at first but after a little convincing she agreed to give it one more go. So I went out and got her some cheap waders, gave her my old vest and rigged up one of my best rod and reel combos for her. She likes using my fancy equipment. We drove down to a nice section of river and plowed through the bush to give steelheading one more go. It was a bright sunny morning and a good day to do a little late season sun tanning. The trees were starting to turn all sorts if colors. No paths had been beaten down along the river and I had a specific spot in mind. A section that I had always wanted to fish but had never been there when the conditions were right. A long run at the top of a large pool. Three to four feet deep during high water with a really nice seam down the middle, about thirty to forty foot long and a lot of boulders breaking up the current. Water was still really dirty (3"-6" visibility). I could literally see the water dropping in front of my eyes. The water was still well above the banks and looked a little scary. We waded in and started fishing. There was no action at first. Jen started razzing me and I was feeling a little down about my false promises. Then she hooked one and all was well this the world (photo). For the next few hours it was "Hammer Fest". At about noon she had enough and was ready to go for lunch. This of course, was part of our agreement. Lunch at the "Black Dog". Four fish landed for the little lady that day with a few lost. Not bad! Jen had fishing fever for a few weeks after that. Well, until it got cold.

Life would suck without those awsome creatures wriggling around in the darkness below.
