The Worst Fishing Expo

Posted On February 06, 2012
The New York Coalition for Recreational Fishing used to put together a 1st class fishing expo every year at Farmingdale College. I would look forward to their show every year. Last year they moved the expo to the Islandia Marriot Hotel. I didn't go last year because I was in Florida. I was glad to find out that I would be in NY this year and I would be able to go to the show. I paid the admission and walked into the show to find that there was only 25 to 30 booths. I like to walk through the expo to see what the vendors are selling and to check out the prices. I was through the whole show in 10 minutes. The tackle shops brought their low end rods and reels and all the stuff that didn't sell during 2011. Of course there were the vendors selling socks, candy coated nuts and cell phones. If it weren't for Captain Kayak where I bought some accessories for my kayak I wouldn't have spent any money.  I went there looking to buy a Penn Battle reel and all the tackle stores were selling reels in the $25 to $50 range. I did put my name down to become a volunteer for the CCA. I know the NYCRF is trying to raise money for their organisation but they should be ashamed of this expo they put together. I will never go again.

It's Good To Be Back Fishing

I haven't been able to fish for almost a month because I had skin cancer surgery. Today is the first day that the doctor said that I would be able to resume fishing. I didn't want to push the envelope and take my boat to the ramp by myself so I rigged up my surf rod and headed on down to Jones Inlet. When I got to the beach I asked a couple of the surf rats if anything was biting. They told me

Hey Pop Pop Your On TV

My daughter is pregnant and is due any day and my son in law had the flu. My wife and I had my granddaughter stay at our house for a few days while my son in law recovered from the flu to make life easier for the two of them. My granddaughter and I were in the living room. She was coloring in her coloring book and I was reading this weeks issue of The Fisherman Magazine

An Anglers Worst Enemy - Skin Cancer

My friend WFN Ambassador of the Year Mark Bilbrey contacted me via Facebook asking me if I was ready to put my boat in the water. I told him that I just got back from the dermatologist and he found more skin cancer. I had the surgery on Monday and it went well, the doctor removed all the cancer. I can't fish for at least 3 weeks. Mark suggested that I should write a blog on how to

Redemption Outdoors Depth Charge Lures

A couple of weeks ago fellow WFN Ambassador Mark Bilbrey contacted me asking if I would be willing to field test Redemption Outdoors lures in the saltwater. I told him that I would be honored to test them. I was asked to pick out a couple of colors that would work in saltwater. I chose "Trashy Trout" which color resembles peanut bunker (baby menhaden) and

NYS Sets Fluke Regulations For 2012

New York State has announced the new fluke (summer flounder) regulations for 2012. The minimum size has been lowered to 19 1/2 inches, last years minimum size was 20 1/2 inches. The bag limit has also been raised from 3 fish to 4 fish. The season will run from May 1st to September 30th.       I agree with NYS in lowering the minimum size to 19 1/2 inches so

I have been fishing for over 50 years. I live on Long Island NY which is a fishermans paradise. I'm recently retired and I spend a lot of time doing what I love best which is fishing with my family and friends. I have a Scout 187 Sportfish center console boat. You can usually find me out on the water fishing for fluke, stripers, weakfish, black seabass and blue fish. I like to fish with soft plastic baits but I will also use plugs, spoons, jigs and live bait. When I'm not on my boat you can find me at the beach surf casting to stripers and blue fish. In my travels I have fished in Costa Rica, Mexico and the Florida Keys. I have a small condo in Punta Gorda Fl which has become my winter retreat. My wife and I have Hobie Revolution 11 kayaks and we spend a lot of time fishing and exploring the mangrove creeks and flats of Charlotte Harbor. When I'm out on the kayak I fish for snook, redfish, tarpon and sea trout with soft plastic baits. When we are not on the kayaks we will be at the beach. My wife will be soaking up some rays and catching up on her reading while I'm surf casting live bait and artificials for redfish, snook and sharks. I enjoy writing about fishing and I had the honor of being chosen as a WFN Top Ambassador on 6/21/11.
