    Tackle Care & Maintenance
Rod Maintenance
1)  Rub cotton ball in guides to check for cracks and nicks.
2)  Clean rods with Penn Rod & Reel Cleaner. Make sure you clean the guides under the wraps.
3)   I fish in saltwater from a small center console boat and my rods are always getting sprayed with               saltwater so I apply marine wax to the rods for extra protection.
4)   Store rods on rod rack in garage.
Reel Maintenance

1)   Clean the reel with Penn Rod & Reel Cleaner.
2)    Remove spool and handle. Put a few drops of reel oil on the bail, shaft and bearings.
3)    Carefully remove drag washers and place them on a clean surface in the order you removed them.           I then clean them with WD-40. Wipe them dry with a clean rag and if it is a dry drag place them back         into the spool in the proper order. If it's a wet drag apply a thin film of reel grease to the washers.
4)    Reassemble reel, if the reel operates smoothly I do not remove side plate.
5)    I use braided line so I only change the line if it is necessary.
6)    Spray reels with a light coating of Blakemore Real Magic and place them into original box. I place
reel boxes in a cabinet in the basement.

Tackle care
1)   Clean salt off tackle bags with a mild detergent and water.
2)   Remove lures from tackle boxes and spray with clean water. Hang lures until dried.
3)   Clean Plano & Falcon tackle boxes with mild detergent and water.
4)   Place lures back into boxes and check them for rusted hooks or damage.
5)   Replace the rusted hooks on the lures.
6)   Clean all Gulp buckets and packages with soap & water and store them in a warm place.

It's Good To Be Back Fishing

I haven't been able to fish for almost a month because I had skin cancer surgery. Today is the first day that the doctor said that I would be able to resume fishing. I didn't want to push the envelope and take my boat to the ramp by myself so I rigged up my surf rod and headed on down to Jones Inlet. When I got to the beach I asked a couple of the surf rats if anything was biting. They told me

Hey Pop Pop Your On TV

My daughter is pregnant and is due any day and my son in law had the flu. My wife and I had my granddaughter stay at our house for a few days while my son in law recovered from the flu to make life easier for the two of them. My granddaughter and I were in the living room. She was coloring in her coloring book and I was reading this weeks issue of The Fisherman Magazine

An Anglers Worst Enemy - Skin Cancer

My friend WFN Ambassador of the Year Mark Bilbrey contacted me via Facebook asking me if I was ready to put my boat in the water. I told him that I just got back from the dermatologist and he found more skin cancer. I had the surgery on Monday and it went well, the doctor removed all the cancer. I can't fish for at least 3 weeks. Mark suggested that I should write a blog on how to

Redemption Outdoors Depth Charge Lures

A couple of weeks ago fellow WFN Ambassador Mark Bilbrey contacted me asking if I would be willing to field test Redemption Outdoors lures in the saltwater. I told him that I would be honored to test them. I was asked to pick out a couple of colors that would work in saltwater. I chose "Trashy Trout" which color resembles peanut bunker (baby menhaden) and

NYS Sets Fluke Regulations For 2012

New York State has announced the new fluke (summer flounder) regulations for 2012. The minimum size has been lowered to 19 1/2 inches, last years minimum size was 20 1/2 inches. The bag limit has also been raised from 3 fish to 4 fish. The season will run from May 1st to September 30th.       I agree with NYS in lowering the minimum size to 19 1/2 inches so

I have been fishing for over 50 years. I live on Long Island NY which is a fishermans paradise. I'm recently retired and I spend a lot of time doing what I love best which is fishing with my family and friends. I have a Scout 187 Sportfish center console boat. You can usually find me out on the water fishing for fluke, stripers, weakfish, black seabass and blue fish. I like to fish with soft plastic baits but I will also use plugs, spoons, jigs and live bait. When I'm not on my boat you can find me at the beach surf casting to stripers and blue fish. In my travels I have fished in Costa Rica, Mexico and the Florida Keys. I have a small condo in Punta Gorda Fl which has become my winter retreat. My wife and I have Hobie Revolution 11 kayaks and we spend a lot of time fishing and exploring the mangrove creeks and flats of Charlotte Harbor. When I'm out on the kayak I fish for snook, redfish, tarpon and sea trout with soft plastic baits. When we are not on the kayaks we will be at the beach. My wife will be soaking up some rays and catching up on her reading while I'm surf casting live bait and artificials for redfish, snook and sharks. I enjoy writing about fishing and I had the honor of being chosen as a WFN Top Ambassador on 6/21/11.
