This Week on Extreme Angler TV- Mississippi Monster Crappie

Posted On January 23, 2013

Never get enough of crappie!
On this weeks episode of Extreme Angler TV,I return to the "land of giants" in good `ole Miss.

Mississippi is home to some of the best crappie fishing in North America, offering so many lakes that harbour hubcap sized slabs in the three pound range on a regular basis to visiting anglers worldwide.

Fishing with my good buddy Tim Blackley of the Strike King Pro Team

The only difference between this years road trip to `ole Miss and past seasons was the unexpected weather that sprung upon us the same day we arrived which included high winds and rain, lots of rain. Enough rain to raise the water levels some five plus feet from the prior day!
Lucky for me, I was fishing with my good buddy from Tennessee, Tim Blackley of the Strike King National Pro Team who has been blessed with the ability and skill of the ultimate crappie hunter.
Everything from his boat, tow vehicle, equipment and tackle, is geared for chasing and catching crappie all across the USA.

Typical Spider Rig using multiple rods at different depths with different baits used in the U.S.
Faced with the severe weather conditions and high water, Tim suggested we use one of the most popular techniques and presentations in the Mid & Southwest U.S., and that is the multiple rod set up with a Spider Rig system.
It may look easy, but trust me it is not as easy as it looks.
Knowing how to set your rods at different depths depending on the shallow or deep water your fishing with different baits, weight of jighead and with either slip bobber or tight lining, it takes a lot of practice to perfect.
My hat goes off to these hardcore crappie anglers, they are dead serious about catching slabs.

We set up lines at different depths, with different colored Strike King rage tail slab hammer crappie grubs and let the fish tell us which color pattern they wanted on this particular day.
Controling our drift to match the conditions was no easy task, but Tim is the professional, and eventually we got on to some real nice slabs and missed some monsters that just didn`t want to be on TV this day!

Overall, the day was a success and made me want to return to the "Land of the Giants" in good old Mississippi year after year.
Enjoy the show.
