Stop n` Drop Smallmouth Bass

Stubborn summertime smallmouth bass.
Sometimes these super aggressive, big brown bass will only eat our baits when they are stopped dead! That was the exact mood I found them on a day we decided to head north and shoot a show with some calm stable weather, figuring the smallies would be in a spunky mood and make for an easy show, wrong!

When I got to some of my proven locations and saw my waypoints we`re literally covered in fish symbols and streaking fish, I thought I was going to off the water in a couple hours, wrong again!

Sure, my areas held fish, but they we`re in no mood whatsoever to chase spinnerbaits as this was my first choice for the day.
Picked up my crankbait rod and speed burnt that little crankbait in the same areas with the same results, no bites, no strikes, no fish.
The it hit me like a Mike Tyson left hook on the jaw.
I threw the same Strike King pro model crankbait, but after speed burning that bait to the desired depth, I would "kill it", just stop it dead in its tracks and count to ten before engaging the reel once again.
This proven to be deadly on these less than aggressive smallmouth.

Strike King Pro Model crankbait

To this day it still amazes me how hard they would strike the crankbait, only when it was stationary at a dead stop, stand still, yet not bother to even take a sniff at it when it was moving.
Hit some real nice fish with this speed and kill presentation, but even then the bite slowed after a while and I began seeing more fish follow my baits to the boat and slowly sink to the depths.
No problem there.
I put down the crankbait rod every time this happened, picked up my St.Croix drop shot rod and dropped the bait right below the boat and did the slow, shimmy, shake and most times, the rod would just load up and fish on!
Strike King Dream Shot

This episode is jam packed with useful information you can use next time you go fishing and expect the bite to be hard and fast, and its not.
Be versatile, change your baits, presentations and you too will have a day like I did boating a bunch of big brown bass. Enjoy.
