Black Slab Fest

Posted On May 11, 2011
Went to one of my fav crappie holes on Georgian Bay today to film a show for season 10 of Extreme Angler TV and invited my buddy Tai Dang as my guest.

Took a little effort to locate the kind of fish I was looking for, but found the "motherload" of slabbers in a small cut in approx 2 feet of H20 with Strike King fruity tooty tubes under Blackbird slip floats. The high winds off Georgian Bay made it somewhat a challenge to stay on the fish, so with a little team work we positioned upwind of the fish and anchored the boat so we could make the long casts from a stationary position to the fish holding in the ultra shallow water without spooking them.

The bigger crappie were holding tight to scattered weed clumps in the middle of the channel during the a.m. and moved to the far left side of the channel as the sun rose and the water temps increased along the shoreline. We had to place the tube jig/float in pinpoint locations directly on top or beside the weed clumps or simply would not get bit.

As is the case when fishing for big slab crappie, we lost some real bruiser size fish due to the sheer size of the fish and lightly lip hooked fish, but it was all caught on camera for our viewers come this fall when season 10 begins to air.

The sun was bright and warm, the fish we`re biting and we had one heck of a good day which made for a great deposit into the bank of "good memories".

Jurassic Park Canuck Slabs

What a few days of sun and warmer temps can do for Ontario crappie. Over the past two weeks or so, I have been scouting various locations across Southern Ontario in search of some bigger than your hand-sized crappie with little to no luck. Sure, I could sink my boat with eight to ten inch crappie, but I would much rather locate, dominate and film a show with those big black slabs that

Road Trippin' to Crappie Heaven

Returned a short while back from one of my most enjoyable and entertaining road trips filming for season 11 of Extreme Angler TV to Tennessee and Mississippi in search of some monster crappie with my good buddies Tim Blackley and Jackie Vancleave of the Strike King pro crappie team. I have to admit, fishing for crappie with these guys is "intense" and as serious as it gets. Reminds me a lot of

Fall Brawling Smallmouth

Were do I begin? This late fall fishing for smallmouth bass on smaller inland cottage country lakes has been nothing short of "extremely incredible". Over the last 2 weeks, I have visited some of favorite smallmouth lakes in Ontario's near north cottage country in search of a big bass bite and have yet to be disappointed by the results, and what makes it even more exciting is capturing all

Touchdown with the Football Jig

Had a amazing day yesterday filming a show for Extreme Angler TV on a north-eastern Kawartha Lakes District lake using the Strike King Tour Grade Football jig and Baby Rage Craw trailer in summer craw tones. The weatherman finally got it correct, no rain and low winds made for perfect conditions to fish/film on a location that requires precise boat positioning very close to rock walls and rock

Tennesse Trippin'

Man, has this summer gone by in a flash. One day I`m preparing my boat and gear for Bass season opener, the next thing I know, I`m loading up my long johns and cold weather gear for autumn road trips. Just returned from my most recent road trip to sunny, warm Tennessee for my annual Strike King Lure Co. pro team writers conference where many of the media including (tv, publications, website
