Staying Comfortable on Big Water

Posted On December 12, 2011
A lot of my fishing is done on big water; whether its Lake Ontario, Niagara River, Lake Nipigon or Lake Erie, staying dry and comfortable plays a huge factor in a successful day of fishing. I know from experience, and I'm sure most anglers can agree, being cold and wet does not motivate you to be out in the elements trying to catch fish.

I was in the market for a good quality rain suit and came across the LL Bean Big Water Rain Suit. It looked good, fit well so I decided to give it a try. I used the suit on Lake Ontario and Lake Nipigon primarily this year and at the very least I was quite impressed. The suit is made of gortex, padded knee's, tons of pockets and storage, kept me warm and dry 100% of the time. Its virtually wind proof and I always take it with me when I'm fishing big water where conditions can change in a heartbeat. Whether it be boat spray from waves or rain, sleet or snow, this suit is an integral part of my outing.

The two piece configuration is great for when it gets warm, you can peel off the jacket and keep the bib pants on. Great for keeping fish slime off of your clothes too!

The bib pants also have vents for aeration to keep you cool in the heat and shoe clips to ensure the pants don't ride up and above your shoe.

On my Lake Nipigon trip this Summer, the weather constantly changed from roasting hot to freezing cold to getting sprayed from the boat in gusty winds. The suit kept me extremely comfortable.

South Shore Lake Ontario Spring Trout Salmon

Its Spring time and the Southern Shore of Lake Ontario is starting heat up. The warm water outflow from the Niagara River is calling in baitfish to the shallows and trout and salmon are gorging themselves on smelt and alewife. This year I've been lucky enough to get out on the water a few times and earlier than most considering the early Spring we've had. Trolling shallow water calls for a more

Spring Steelhead at its Finest!!!

With Spring steelheading in full swing, rivers are teaming with hungry bright chrome steelhead. Since I've been away in Florida, I've been dying to come back to tie into some sweet steel. After speaking with a few friends and observing weather and stream data, I decided to hit a North Shore Lake O Trib along side my good buddy Adam. With warm weather and snow on the bank, you just

On Lake Ontario with Maui Jim Downrigging in the Blue Zone

I spent a day on Lake Ontario last summer downrigging for trout and salmon and it was one of those hot as heck and very bright days. Blue bird skies and not a cloud in sight. The sun was coming at me from every angle, and the glare on the water was incredibly strong. The great thing about these days is that the sun helps with throwing a really good flash off the lure to get the fishes

Fall Steelheading/Amundson Centrepin Combo Review

Fall time is tributary time. Time to put the boat away and brake out the long sticks. This fall has been very rewarding having a lot of success on numerous rivers. If you've never fished for brown and rainbow trout before, you can't beat the feeling you get when you hook your first tail walking salmonid of the season. Timing is key! Wait for a big blast of rain and make your way down to
