On Lake Ontario with Maui Jim Downrigging in the Blue Zone

Posted On January 25, 2012
I spent a day on Lake Ontario last summer downrigging for trout and salmon and it was one of those hot as heck and very bright days. Blue bird skies and not a cloud in sight. The sun was coming at me from every angle, and the glare on the water was incredibly strong. The great thing about these days is that the sun helps with throwing a really good flash off the lure to get the fishes attention. With my glasses on, I could easily see our lures 20 feet below the surface.

 Polarized sunglasses have become almost mandatory while out on the water; for safety, comfort and to identify fish and structure under water. Glasses have come a long way in design and style when it comes to fishing lenses. Yeah you could go out and buy a pair of $20 glasses but these ones from Maui Jim are pretty cool.

Designed by Guy Harvey, famous underwater artist, has put his spin on some cool shades for Maui Jim. Each pair of glasses has Guy Harvey's artwork printed on the inside of the arms. His art work is one of a kind and with Maui Jim behind the glasses, its a great combination.

A little background on Guy Harvey; as a passionate artist for the underwater world, Guy is a leading advocate for protection of our environment. He dedicates his talents and time to programs that protect the oceans.

If you're in the market for a cool new set of shades, check them out.

Fishing was great that day; we boated 15 or so fish and lost a few more. We fished between 250 and 350 fow (feet of water), and had our lures between 10 and 50 feet below the surface.  Its pretty simple out there, speed should be between around 3 miles an hour and lures down to approx. 50 feet.  Run cheaters of the downrigger rods and dipsys out on a 3 setting back between 60 and 150 feet.  Experiment with lengths and depths and you'll be into fish.  Its a great fishery that is underutilized, so take advantage while you can!

Building A Custom Fishing Rod with Batson Enterprises and Lake Lady Custom Fishing Rods Part II

After going through the process of building two custom downrigging rods, all that was left was to do was to use them, and boy did I put those rods to the limits.   I can't take any credit for the sprial wrap idea, it came from Kris. I didn't even suggest it to him but it was his years of experience that guided him through this style of rod. A little info on spiral wrapped rods;

My "go-to" fishing line - Seaguar Grand Max / Kanzen Review

I've had the opportunity over the last year to review a few of Seaguars newest products. Their Kanzen Braid as well as their Grand Max Leader material. I've used both is completely different applications but they both held up extremely well.  Let's start with the Grand Max leader. What I look for in a leader material are two main things, abrasion resistance and how limp the line is. There

Spring Steelheading with the New Nimbus Fishpond Guide Pack

This past spring was great for dropback steelhead fishing. The rivers were full of fish due to lower than usual water conditions, and most anglers took advantage of it. I know I did! Spring steelhead fishing is a tradition for me. All the streams are open from top to bottom (in most cases), anglers are spread out and there are lots of fish to be had. This Spring I spent most of my time

Summer Time Riggin' on Lake Ontario

Summer time is Rigging time on Lake Ontario and its in full swing! With pretty much every species of fish in open season right now, I never stray from the reel peel. Its a drug, nothing compares to a 30lb Chinook Salmon peeling line like fresh water shark! It was a great Spring for Salmon fishing and tactics change, ie trolling speeds, lures, fish depths etc. Here is the run down on

Building A Custom Fishing Rod with Batson Enterprises and Lake Lady Custom Fishing Rods

A few years ago I teamed up with Batson Enterprises to do an article on a custom built float rod. It was an awesome experience working with both Batson and a talented rod builder out of Ohio, Domenic Federico of Infinity Rod Creations. I thought it would be equally exciting to do another build but for a pair of downrigging rods as well with a new builder. After speaking with Batson and sourcing a
