On Lake Ontario with Maui Jim Downrigging in the Blue Zone

Posted On January 25, 2012
I spent a day on Lake Ontario last summer downrigging for trout and salmon and it was one of those hot as heck and very bright days. Blue bird skies and not a cloud in sight. The sun was coming at me from every angle, and the glare on the water was incredibly strong. The great thing about these days is that the sun helps with throwing a really good flash off the lure to get the fishes attention. With my glasses on, I could easily see our lures 20 feet below the surface.

Polarized sunglasses have become almost mandatory while out on the water; for safety, comfort and to identify fish and structure under water. Glasses have come a long way in design and style when it comes to fishing lenses. Yeah you could go out and buy a pair of $20 glasses but these ones from Maui Jim are pretty cool.

Designed by Guy Harvey, famous underwater artist, has put his spin on some cool shades for Maui Jim. Each pair of glasses has Guy Harvey's artwork printed on the inside of the arms. His art work is one of a kind and with Maui Jim behind the glasses, its a great combination.

A little background on Guy Harvey; as a passionate artist for the underwater world, Guy is a leading advocate for protection of our environment. He dedicates his talents and time to programs that protect the oceans.

Fishing was great that day; we boated 15 or so fish and lost a few more. We fished between 250 and 350 fow (feet of water), and had our lures between 10 and 50 feet below the surface.  Its pretty simple out there, speed should be between around 3 miles an hour and lures down to approx. 50 feet.  Run cheaters of the downrigger rods and dipsys out on a 3 setting back between 60 and 150 feet.  Experiment with lengths and depths and you'll be into fish.  Its a great fishery that is underutilized, so take advantage while you can!

South Shore Lake Ontario Spring Trout Salmon

Its Spring time and the Southern Shore of Lake Ontario is starting heat up. The warm water outflow from the Niagara River is calling in baitfish to the shallows and trout and salmon are gorging themselves on smelt and alewife. This year I've been lucky enough to get out on the water a few times and earlier than most considering the early Spring we've had. Trolling shallow water calls for a more

Spring Steelhead at its Finest!!!

With Spring steelheading in full swing, rivers are teaming with hungry bright chrome steelhead. Since I've been away in Florida, I've been dying to come back to tie into some sweet steel. After speaking with a few friends and observing weather and stream data, I decided to hit a North Shore Lake O Trib along side my good buddy Adam. With warm weather and snow on the bank, you just

Fall Steelheading/Amundson Centrepin Combo Review

Fall time is tributary time. Time to put the boat away and brake out the long sticks. This fall has been very rewarding having a lot of success on numerous rivers. If you've never fished for brown and rainbow trout before, you can't beat the feeling you get when you hook your first tail walking salmonid of the season. Timing is key! Wait for a big blast of rain and make your way down to
