Fall Steelheading/Amundson Centrepin Combo Review

Posted On December 13, 2011
Fall time is tributary time. Time to put the boat away and brake out the long sticks. This fall has been very rewarding having a lot of success on numerous rivers. If you've never fished for brown and rainbow trout before, you can't beat the feeling you get when you hook your first tail walking salmonid of the season.

Timing is key! Wait for a big blast of rain and make your way down to the river a few days afterwards armed with some spawn sacs, spinners, crank baits, kwik fish, worms or flies. They all work when fished properly.

Every river acts differently after rains so pay attention to amount of rain that has fallen; creating a journal helps to track when you're just starting out. In most cases, you want to be there when the river has about 1.5 to 2 feet of visibility after a good rain.

Let's face it, if you're addicted to fishing like me, than you're more than likely addicted to fishing gear. I love testing as much fishing and clothing gear as possible so when someone asks me for advice I can speak to an intelligent level based on experiences. There is so much gear on the market that it can make buying a particular item quite challenging.

The past few weeks I have been testing the new Amundson Centerpin reel and 13 foot 3 piece float rod. I fished various Lake Ontario tributaries for migratory rainbow and brown trout and put a lot of fish on the bank over that time. I was very impressed with its overall performance compared to other centerpin reels of it calibre.

Let's start with the reel. It is extremely light, probably one of the lightest I've tested so far. It spins very good and balances nicely on the rod itself. Anyone looking to enter into the wonderful world of centerpinning for migratory salmonids, this is a fantastic option to consider.

The rod comes with a built in real seat which is nice feature. It has an extreme slow taper, making it very practical to fish with very light leader. This would be a great rod for small stream fishing, probably not sufficient for really big water like the Salmon River or Saugeen where there is a large volume of flow and a longer rod with more backbone is needed.

The two pieces together create a very smooth and light combo.

South Shore Lake Ontario Spring Trout Salmon

Its Spring time and the Southern Shore of Lake Ontario is starting heat up. The warm water outflow from the Niagara River is calling in baitfish to the shallows and trout and salmon are gorging themselves on smelt and alewife. This year I've been lucky enough to get out on the water a few times and earlier than most considering the early Spring we've had. Trolling shallow water calls for a more

Spring Steelhead at its Finest!!!

With Spring steelheading in full swing, rivers are teaming with hungry bright chrome steelhead. Since I've been away in Florida, I've been dying to come back to tie into some sweet steel. After speaking with a few friends and observing weather and stream data, I decided to hit a North Shore Lake O Trib along side my good buddy Adam. With warm weather and snow on the bank, you just

On Lake Ontario with Maui Jim Downrigging in the Blue Zone

I spent a day on Lake Ontario last summer downrigging for trout and salmon and it was one of those hot as heck and very bright days. Blue bird skies and not a cloud in sight. The sun was coming at me from every angle, and the glare on the water was incredibly strong. The great thing about these days is that the sun helps with throwing a really good flash off the lure to get the fishes
