Cocodrie, Louisiana... Fishing at its finest!

Posted On February 13, 2012
On Monday, January 23rd, 2012 I jumped a plane in Toronto and took the short, 2 hour and 40 minute flight to New Orleans, Louisiana to meet up with my crew as we were scheduled to shoot two shows in Cocodrie, Louisiana, just South of Houma. The drive took us about an hour and forty five minutes from the airport and we arrived at Boudreaux’s Marina, who’s slogan describes the location to a tee... “Where the road ends, and the fishing begins!”.We met up with Capt. Andre Boudreaux who owns the fish camp and also guides... the camp was full service with fuel, slips, plenty of clean rooms and an on site restaurant.

We headed out on Tuesday morning in his 24 foot boat to fish the endless back waters and bayous that surround the camp in search of Redfish and Speckled Trout. By days end we boated a bunch of fish and ended up catching 5 species on camera... Redfish, Speckled Sea Trout, Baby Black Drum, Flounder and Sheephead. Every fish was caught on either a single 1/8th oz. jig head with a Panicked Perch PowerTeam Lures JP Hammershad or the same set up tied as a double rig which I explain in the show.

On day 2 we headed out in search of what makes Cocodrie so popular with hardcore anglers, Bull Redfish and Big Black Drum and despite the colder temps and massive winds, the bayous of the area allowed us comfortable fishing breaking the waves before they got a chance to build.... By days end we had a phenomenal show in the can with over a dozen Bull Reds up to 35 pounds, Big Black Drum from 20 to 35 lbs and even some big ‘ole Gaff Tops.Day 3 we set out to shoot some web videos and we headed out for the Bulls and Black Drum once again. Even with a slack tide we ended up over 15 fish in under 4 hours from 20 to 35 pounds.... needless to say the fishing is incredible despite January being considered the “slow season”. If that’s what Cocodrie and Boudreaux’s Marina consider slow, I can only imagine what the fishing is like in prime season! Even at night we would head down to the docks and this giant Black Drum was the catch of the night... a 40 minute fight with 10 lb Power Pro Super8Slick is something I will never forget! All in all, it’s easy to see just how incredible the fishing is just South of Houma in Cocodrie and the wildlife is an attraction worth witnessing... Porpoises, a myriad of Birds and unlimited water life all added to the charm of this fishing paradise. If you’re looking to beat the winter blues and want to stretch some line and bend a rod, look up Boudreaux’s Marina.... you won’t regret it!

Raised in Southern Ontario, JP DeRose has had a passion for angling that has remained constant in his life. Throughout high school and University, JP’s ardor for competitive sports carried over into fishing and flourished while chasing Salmon and Trout drifting rivers which eventually led him to lake fishing and finally into tournaments. In 2005, JP decided to step into Canada’s highest level of fishing competition by entering the Pro-Am circuit as a boater after only 5 years of competing in small tournaments, winning Rookie of the Year in convincing fashion. In 2006, WFN (World Fishing Network) was created and filmed the Pro-Am Series. In an interview, JP was a natural in front the camera and represented WFN for that season as their sponsored pro. Winning the 3rd tour stop that year, JP quickly adapted to being in front of a camera and was sent to iCast to try his hand at interviewing which quickly led to his own show, a WFN original production called Getting School’d with JP DeRose. Now in its 4th season, Getting School’d has become an authority on new gear and instructional fishing. Dedicating his free time to the Canadian Bass Anglers Federation, JP has held the position of club president for the past 7 years and continues to grow his chapter dedicated to developing fishing at a grass roots level. With over 130 top 10 finishes and 30 wins in tournaments over the past 11 years, JP’s primary focus aside from Getting School’d and competing in tournaments is to help people become better anglers through seminars, breaking down the techniques and tactics that lead to angler versatility and success.
