Vancouver Island Bass Report

Date: November 10, 2011
Location: Quennell Lake, Nanaimo
Weather: Partly cloudy, 10C, slight breeze
Water conditions: 45-47F, 2-4' visibility, level high

Chad's Lowe Stinger on the move!

Matt Benson and I hit Quennell Lake for about 6 hours and landed 8 smallmouth bass. Our main pattern was targetting structure like points, humps, and reefs that went from about 8' to 29' depth. Almost all our bass were caught on tube jigs (4" black w/red flake on a 1/4 oz football head jig) and brown spider grubs rigged Texas-style. Most bites occured while dragging our lures up or alongside the structure. All bass ranged from 3-4 lbs.

I was using a 7' medium action Quantum Tour Edition PT rod, matched with a 30-Series Quantum Kinetic spinning reel spooled with 12 lb test mono line with a 4' leader of Berkley Trilene 100% fluorocarbon 12 lb test line. My tube jig is a custom-poured 1/4 oz jig using a 2/0 Mustad Ultra-Point red jig hook.

We did try fishing shallower (6-15') in shoreline cover (laydown trees) but no takers.

Even in November, Quennell Lake has heavy algae blooms.

The balmy Vancouver Island climate keeps water temps in the mid 40s well into November.
