Rockfish (striped bass) season is upon us and life is good! In the Albemarle sound in North Eastern North Carolina, you are allowed to keep (3) fish per person with a total length (TL) of 18". The stripers here in the sound are generally smaller and as you can see, you catch quite a few that are just under the limit. They are out there if you have the persistence to go after them. Live eels are recommended and many different types of artificial lures work too. I use everything from Gulp swim bait (swimming mullet, white and chartreuse) to rattle traps and buck tails. Working the pilings at the bridge is fun but brutal on baits and lures. While the Wright Memorial Bridge is usually my main target, I always keep an eye out for birds feeding on bait fish that have been pushed to the surface by schooling stripers. Fish on!

Boat preparation is a major part of the spring ritual. The fishery reopened on June 16, allowing recreational fishermen to keep six speckled trout per day, with a 14-inch size minimum. One of my favorite fish to catch is Spotted Sea trout (speckled). The regulations right now are the same for NC state coastal waters and the Ocean, 14" total length, 10 per day. I catch them primarily in the Albemarle and Currituck Sounds in north eastern North Carolina. You can also catch them off the beaches in the Outer Banks. While they have been smaller this year than in years past,
I got fishing down, now I just need to work on that catching part!
