Shack Wacky

Posted On February 08, 2012
Got out to do some smelt spearing for the first time this winter down Big Island. It was a really nice day, -3 degrees and the sun was out most of the day.

No problem finding a good shack to use, matter of fact, I moved around and check out a few others in the first 3 hours looking for smelts ending up back at the first one, with no luck. Nobody even seen a smelt which made me pack up my gear and go farther down the island and try another spot.
There was a couple guys fishing smelts on the ice and they had a few but not that many to be setting there all day. As luck would have it I found the only empty shack and started waiting for smelts. I was there about an hour and as I stood up to stretch my legs the first two smelts went through my hole (darn).
You try a lot of deferent things to attract smelts like tapping or talking, I guess I was just getting shack wacky. Finally the owner of the shack I was using show up and even thou he was sorry I had to go, I believe he put me out of my misery.

I ended up getting 7, yes 7 smelts, not a good day, as the wife informed me that’s 7 smelts in 7 hours. But I was out and I tried and maybe there will be a good run on the next time.

                                              Check out my day

Creels n Reels

Let’s see who is reading this: Fishin Quizz Time!    Name the movies in which fishing plays anything from a major to a minor part.  1.   John Cazale is the Corleone brother who is given a lead sinker while out fishing on Lake Tahoe (and who ends up sleeping with the fishes).  2.  James Stewart is a lawyer who postpones a fishing

What are you Using ?

While fishing for Smallmouth Bass I was pleasantly surprised by hooking a nice Trout.  The boys in the other boat were making inquires on what I was using. Why is it as soon as someone else hooks a fish we got to know what he is using? Do we really have to change our lure to that? Is that the only thing the fish are taking? I don’t know, maybe, or did I just hit

I ran into an interesting fellow by the name of Doug Underhill at the fishing show.

Promoting the Sport of Fly Fishing

The principal objective of the Dieppe Fly Fishing Forum is to promote the sport of fly fishing in general and attract underrepresented demographic groups like women and youth to this activity.    In this video Dave Bishop owner of Salmon Steelhead Flies www.salmonsteelheadflies.com shows 4 year old Tyler a few tips on fly casting. The look on his face says everything.

Just a local river rat from Northern N.S. Canada, who can,t wait till his grandkids are old enough to be learned this great sport of fishing. Love fishing, hunting and the outdoors, tying flies, and making some of my own gear. Making fishing and fly tying videos is another hobby of mine. Now that I was chosen as one of the top ambassadors on this great site, I can only hope that one of my tips on fishing is used by some future angler to bring in that big boy we all dream about...
