Fishing Etiquette

Posted On January 18, 2012
I remember once I was in a hurry to get to a favourite fishing hole on the Barney’s river. It was a perfect day, water temperature and height was perfect. Everything seemed perfect until I rounded the bend and found this angler standing in the middle of my pool.

Ok, it’s not my pool, but I really wanted to fish it. So what do we do, I was spin fishing and he was fly-fishing, I was thinking those two don’t mix. Well I just thought the best thing to do was move along and try my luck farther down stream even thou a lot of other people would jump right in and fish.
We anglers have to have some sort of fishing etiquette, courtesy and tolerance can make a day on a trout stream more enjoyable. Now in my region I could go all day sometimes and not see another angler while in other regions there could be anglers line up along the shore trying to fish.

When this happens you should space out, let’s give some room, a rod length on either side is usually a good distance. But I truly believe that if you approach a small fishing area and someone is already fishing it, you should move on. If you can’t resist, be polite and ask if they mind you fishing.
Don’t walk in the water, nothing is more annoying than an angler wading into the middle of a run someone else is fishing, all you’re doing is scaring the fish and ticking of other anglers. Respect people’s property, if you want to fish and have to go threw someone else’s land to get there, ask for permission. Again, a little thoughtfulness goes a long way. If they don’t give you the ok, move on.
Tolerate other fishing tactics, the fact that I was spin fishing that day and the other angler was fly-fishing doesn’t really matter. Fishing is fishing, we are all doing the same thing but using different tools, show some respect.

Give other anglers room to fight and land their fish. Pull your line in and enjoy the show. If the angler asks for a hand, do so but don’t be that guy that jumped in and knock of his fish with a poor net job. If someone needs some guidance or a hand help out, we all started green. Some kind words or suggestions go a long way.
Always remember your manners, keep your opinions about someone else fishing or yours to yourself (no one cares), don’t be too loud or curse (were here to enjoy the quietness of the river and there could be kids here) and if someone wants to keep their fish, so be it, that his business.
So let’s be all be courteous, mind our manners and …FISH-ON!

Creels n Reels

Let’s see who is reading this: Fishin Quizz Time!    Name the movies in which fishing plays anything from a major to a minor part.  1.   John Cazale is the Corleone brother who is given a lead sinker while out fishing on Lake Tahoe (and who ends up sleeping with the fishes).  2.  James Stewart is a lawyer who postpones a fishing

What are you Using ?

While fishing for Smallmouth Bass I was pleasantly surprised by hooking a nice Trout.  The boys in the other boat were making inquires on what I was using. Why is it as soon as someone else hooks a fish we got to know what he is using? Do we really have to change our lure to that? Is that the only thing the fish are taking? I don’t know, maybe, or did I just hit

Promoting the Sport of Fly Fishing

The principal objective of the Dieppe Fly Fishing Forum is to promote the sport of fly fishing in general and attract underrepresented demographic groups like women and youth to this activity.    In this video Dave Bishop owner of Salmon Steelhead Flies www.salmonsteelheadflies.com shows 4 year old Tyler a few tips on fly casting. The look on his face says everything.
