Personal Records

Posted On January 24, 2012

I've been very fortunate so far being able to get out fishing with some of the areas premiere anlgers. So when I say " personal records " it's very important to recognize the people who have helped me learn what I need to know to catch these fish, or the one's that actually helped me catch these fish.

I also realized that I have caught several species of fish in many different bodies of water. So this year I am going to track a little more closely the catches I make through out the year. But I can share my two largest fish I have caught to date. Salmon and Sturgeon.

25 pound Chinook Salmon

Fishing in the Fall just off the shores of West Vancouver at the mouth of the Capilano River. This time of year in the area is a salmon fishing bonanza. Fish up to 50 pounds have been caught. This fish put up an amazing fight and my good friend Jason Assonitis from Bonchovy fishing charters was close at hand to get me into the fish and net it for me. As you will see by the video below this fish was caught using a purple coloured glo flasher and an anchovy rigged with a straight up green glo Rhys Davis teaser head fished off the bottom. Biggest fish of the day and biggest Salmon to date for me. I'm still seeking my first " Tyee " though a Salmon over 30 pounds. Still an amazing fish.

Here's the battle :

5 foot 6 inch Sturgeon

Late fall fishing with my good fishing bud Jeremy Welch we hooked this fish using a pink salmon roe bait bag. This fish was caught just down from the Vedder Mouth outflow on the Fraser River. I do need to mention Frank Kozel and Jordi Williams who took me out early in the year and showed me all the Sturgeon fishing techniques I needed to get going and get into fish quickly. Fishing with those guys in March we did hit a fish that was almost 6 feet. This is the largest fish I have been able to measure and hold for a still. Here's the battle.

Here's an epic battle with a cask of a fish that we wanted to get released quickly but didn't measure and because of its size did not take it out of the water. My friend Jeremy insisted it was 6 feet plus but we just will never know !

Steelhead Tackle Tactics The Basics

So with five days left in the Vedder River Gear/Bait fishing season. The Vedder closes April 30th and opens to Fly Anglers only May 1  .... the river has been in rough shape with the increase in temperature and some of the precipitation we have had lately. It's going to be tough for me to get out there and get into my twelfth Steelhead in my first season to round things out to a cool
