IGFA recognizes 405lb Yellowfin Tuna World Record

Posted On March 08, 2011

A recently hooked 405 lb Yellowfin Tuna has just been approved by the IGFA (International Game Fish Association) to be recognized as a world record in the organization's prestigious  All-Tackle category.

The behemoth Yellowfin Tuna was caught and landed by Mike Livingston from Sunland, California. Besides beating the odds of actually hooking the monster fish, what is significant about this catch is the way in which the catch met the strict criteria of the IGFA record standards.  Jason Schratwieser, IGFA Conservation Director, summarizes the significance this way,

"The IGFA examines all record submissions with extreme rigor, no matter if it is a 1 lb bluegill or a 1,000 lb blue marlin. However, big tuna caught on long-range boats are often not eligible for IGFA records because the angler may have handed off the rod to get around other anglers or used the rail at some point during the fight – both of which are against IGFA International Angling Rules."

I know I would like a chance to battle one of these beasts! Congratulations, Mike!

The forgotten art of lure making

To me, teaching a man to paint to impress the human eye is great. Teaching a man to create his own lure that will fool a wary fish to strike - is art.   There is no question in my mind that tying your own flies or creating and painting your own lures adds a new dynamic to fishing that many of us have never experienced. For angler, blogger and lure creator, Tommy Ellis, it happens all

Counting down spring rainbows

Do not rule out the effectiveness of crank and minnow baits for spring trout.  The mention of spring trout fishing casts up visions of dry flies, silver spoons and small spinners as the standard attractors of choice.  For some reason, using anything else did not seem worthy of mention until a blog visitor and Alberta fishing guide, Mike Robertson shared details about his recent
