It’s another week, and another installment of WFN’s Top Catches (please note the title change – there’s no longer anything “random” about this column!).
Knock it Hoff!
It’s probably not much of a stretch to say that David Hassellhoff is one of the greatest entertainers of all time. OK, maybe it is – but, still, the guy deserves some credit for his longevity. And now, it seems as though his legacy will continue on, as a team of U.K. scientists conducting research near Antarctica have nicknamed a newly-discovered species of crab “The Hoff Crab.” The crab is a type of yeti crab, which are known for their hairy exterior. And if anyone knows about being hairy…it’s the Hoff.
Attack of the…Seal???
Let’s face it, surfers have a lot of dangers to contend with – sharks, falls, drowning because of a huge wave, to name a few. But none of these compare to a new terror that surfers apparently have to contend with – the seal. Recently, an Australian surfer was sitting on his surfboard and waiting for a wave when he felt something take a bite of his leg. He was bit again while paddling towards shore, and was certain that it was a shark. Imagine his surprise when he looked back and saw a seal poking its head out of the water! Even more incredible, the seal is known to those who frequent the beach where the attack took place, and even has a name: Cecil.
You Want to Hide WHERE?!
The pearl fish is known for its ability to hide from predators in a variety of places, but this one takes the cake. This incredible video shows a pearl fish seeking refuge in the most unusual of places – namely, the anus of a sea cucumber. Yes, you read that correctly. The magic happens at the 6:07 mark, when the fish slowly starts to back itself into the place where the sun doesn’t shine. Eventually, it backs itself all the way inside, which begs the question: what’s the sea cucumber’s take on all of this?
A Freaky Snail Tale
This video is proof that size truly doesn’t matter – in the ocean, at least. Watch in horror as this small cone snail creeps on a sleeping fish and, after paralyzing it, swallows it whole – while the fish is still alive. After a few agonizing minutes, the fish is put out of its misery by a venomous barb.
Nag, Nag, Nag….
We’ll finish up this installment of Top Catches with a funny video. Most anglers are blessed with wives or girlfriends who are very understanding of the fact that their men like to spend a lot of their time on the water.
