LifeProof Nuud Waterproof iPhone Case
If you’re like me, smartphones have become almost as important as tackle and bait. My iPhone 5 is loaded with apps for tides, weather radar, charts and solunar tables, plus it serves as an emergency back-up to my VHF radio. And on the boat or in my kayak especially, that means it needs to be fully protected from the elements. The LifeProof Nuud case does just that.
Featuring a thin, light and durable waterproof (and factory-tested) shell, the Nuud case guards my investment against dirt, dust and accidental submersion up to 6.6 feet. Mine hasn’t been fully dunked yet, but it has gotten sprayed or splashed numerous times without any damage whatsoever. I have dropped the phone several times, though, and it stood up to those jolts just like an M-1 tank. Which is what it’s supposed to do, since the rugged design exceeds military shock standards.
The best feature about the Nuud is that the phone’s screen is sealed around the edges yet open so it responds normally to touch and is crystal clear. All the phone’s other controls and ports are sealed. The camera lens on the back is even covered with non-reflective optical glass so shots of those trophy fish come out as sharp as a freshly-filed hook point. The auxilary cable jack is also threaded so the external speaker connection stays tight and secure. I use this function to listen to my iPod over the truck speakers after a long day on the water.
For superior water- and shock-proof protection for the iPhone, LifeProof’s Nuud case really is an essential piece of angling gear. $89.99 www.lifeproof.com

Went to the Stave River to look for chum salmon. This also marked the first boat and fishing trip for our new fishing buddy, Grady, a puppy.

Another gorgeous typical fall day fishing the Fraser River, British Columbia. Caught both salmon and sturgeon, including a five-footer.
