(Photo courtesy of Work Sharp) With there being a lot of knife sharpeners on the market today, it can be overwhelming figuring out which sharpener is right for you. For myself, I don’t need anything fancy, but something that is dependable and easy to transport. The past couple of weeks I have been lucky enough to test out the Work Sharp Pocket Knife Sharpener. This easy-to-use sharpener is two-sided, featuring a diamond plate for sharpening and a ceramic rod for honing. This lightweight and portable offering from Work Sharp is the perfect tool for sharpening knives when camping, hunting and fishing. To put this sharpener to the test, I gathered my collection of old pocket knives – many of which had not seen the light of day in years. Some of them could not slice through a single piece of paper. I sharpened each one by using the 320 grit diamond plate. By using the 20-degree guide on the diamond plate, I was able to create a consistent, even stroke every time. I was surprised how easy and quick it was to sharpen each of the knives. After a few minutes, I was able to restore each one to as good as new. The freshly sharpened blades were now able to slice through a sheet of paper with ease. Pretty impressive given that these knives had been dull for over 10 years. When I am out fishing, there is nothing that bothers me more than cutting line with a dull blade. While some people use nippers, I often find them too dull for my needs. Over the years, a pocket knife has become my tool of choice. This is where the honing tool on the sharpener comes in handy. When trying to restore a dull blade, you don’t always need to remove metal. Often times you are able to realign the blade. The ceramic rod on the sharpener helps align the blade back into its proper position making it easier to cut. Honing my pocket knife with the ceramic rod allows me to cut leader and tippet with ease. With its portability, I no longer have to deal with dull blades when out on the water. The 20-degree guide on the 320 grit diamond plate makes it easy to create a razorsharp edge. I keep one in my house and one in my truck for when I am on the go. Combined with a lifetime warranty covering you and a family member, this sharpener is a must-have tool for any outdoorsman.
