Freshwater Fishing

Deep sea fishing gets a lot of attention in Florida, but don't dismiss the quality freshwater fishery that exists here. There are no closed fishing seasons for all of Florida's combined 3 million acres of lakes, ponds, and reservoirs, and 10, 550 miles of rivers, streams, and canals. With all that water available year-round, it's no surprise that 1.4 million anglers annually take up the rod and reel for some recreational fishing. But where exactly do all these anglers go to fish? And what are the top species people go after? Read on to find out why freshwater Florida fishing is so hot.

Black Bass

Largemouth Bass.

Four species of black bass make their home in Florida: spotted bass, shoal bass, Suwannee bass, and the Florida largemouth, which is the state freshwater fish. Florida largemouths are a different strain than the common northern largemouth found throughout the rest of North America. Largemouth bass grow to well over 10 pounds in Florida (certified state record is 17.27 lb), making them the premier freshwater species in the state.

A major reason why black bass are such a major target is there wide distribution. As the map to the right indicates, Florida largemouth can be found throughout most of the state, with Suwannee, spotted, and shoal bass taking up residence along the northern portion. Hundreds of quality bass lakes and rivers are spread throughout Florida, but where are the very best spots to go? The FWC has put together a list of the top sites for black bass, including fishing tips for each location. Check out the top sites for bass fishing in Florida by clicking here.

Black bass gets the most attention, but catfish fishing is right up there thanks to a variety of different cats spread throughout the state. Catfish swim in pretty much any freshwater out there, from ponds and lakes to streams and rivers. Channel and flathead catfish are the two most popular species anglers seek, but there’s also white catfish and the biggest cat in all of North America, the blue catfish. Cats over 40 pounds are a real possibility in Florida. To find out where the best spots are, click here.

"Bream" is a local term used throughout southeast Florida that includes a variety of deep-bodied panfish belonging to the sunfish family. Typically, the species included when talking about bream are bluegill, redear sunfish, warmouth, redbreast sunfish, and spotted sunfish. Bluegill, the most popular of bream, as well as redear sunfish can be found in almost every body of water, regardless of size or locale. They are a great fish to go after for first-timers to fishing and to kids. More information on bluegill and redear sunfish can be found in our Fishing 101 section.

How to tie a Spider fly!

Sitting at my tying bench I was inspired to tie something a little different.  I came across a spider pattern in one of my books and modified it so that it was easier to tie and was more fishable than the original. Take a curved scud hook (size 12) and place it in your vice. Take 6/0 white tying thread and dress your hook. Take some white deer hair (not bucktail) and tie it on top of
