Why Fish in Florida?

World of Saltwater Fishing host George Poveromo holds up a dolphinfish.

Florida, the land of beaches, vacation, theme parks, sun, fun, and, not be left out, fishing. If ever there was a place that deserved the nickname “fishing capital of the world” it’s the Sunshine State. Few states can boast the amount of quality bass fishing lakes that Florida can, or the sheer diversity of ocean fish species surrounding its coast. As you would expect, the commercial fishing industry is a thriving part of the Florida economy, but it’s the recreational side of things that makes Florida fishing so special. There are hundreds if not thousands of fishing charters and Florida fishing guides available, with enough bait stores and pro shops to supply any amount of anglers. There’s no better recreational activity than fishing to get the youth outdoors due to its low cost and overall fun factor. Florida even boasts the world’s longest fishing pier, a whopping mile-and-a-half long, and one of the biggest lakes in the United State, Lake Okeechobee. Throw all of that on top of the responsible and effective management of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and you have the perfect storm of fishing quality and availability.

Fishing piers, which are sprinkled throughout the coasts of Florida, are a great way to catch saltwater fish in deeper water without the use of a boat.

So why fish in Florida? Maybe it’s the possibility of going after four different species of black bass that is enticing, or the monster catfish, or maybe your into deep sea fishing and have your eyes set on shark or dorado, or fishing off the beaches of Boca Grande for the king of all inshore fish, the tarpon. It could be because you're looking for a Florida fishing vacation: hey, if you want a fishing trip that'll promise fish and warm sun, Florida's pretty tough to beat, especially with all the available Florida fishing charters and fishing lodges. Whether it's fresh or saltwater, big game fishing or panfish for the kids, Florida has your angling needs covered.

Back to back wins on Lake Okeechobee

How to tie a Spider fly!

Sitting at my tying bench I was inspired to tie something a little different.  I came across a spider pattern in one of my books and modified it so that it was easier to tie and was more fishable than the original. Take a curved scud hook (size 12) and place it in your vice. Take 6/0 white tying thread and dress your hook. Take some white deer hair (not bucktail) and tie it on top of
