SHOP FEATURED FISHING GUIDES SHOP Capt. Heath Stone - Tampa Bay, Florida Meet Capt. Heath Stone of Shallow Water Adventures in Tampa Bay, Florida. How long have you been a guide? I’ve been a guide for seven years – got my license back in 2006. What species of fish do you primarily target? I’m an inshore guide, so generally I target redfish, snook, and trout. What led to you becoming a guide? I was raised an outdoorsman – it definitely runs in my family. Our motto was “family dinners, hunting and fishing.” And now I get to fish for a living, so it’s something of a dream come true. What advice would you give to someone who wants to get into guiding? First and foremost, you have to approach every single trip as a learning experience. I’ve always said that if you don’t take something away from every trip, you’re definitely not doing it right. For example, you have to learn how to adapt to conditions – they’re always changing, and no two trips are ever the same. This is especially true during the winter months. Another important thing to remember is that you have to personable. This way, you’ll be able to find a circle of colleagues that works well for you, and you’ll be able to provide your clients with the best possible experience. Ultimately, guiding is a tough business. You have to do your research, have a lot of knowledge, and stay true to what you’re doing if you want to succeed. What’s your most memorable fishing story from your time as a guide? I remember one time, I took out a guy and his grandfather. I can remember this clearly, because the grandfather had lost the use of his voicebox and had an electronic one. Anyway, they’d already caught a really nice redfish, but they wanted to catch a snook. So we started fishing around a dock, and they hooked one – it was huge, must have been 18 lbs. And it ended up running into the slip of the dock. I told them that it was probably gonna toss the hook, but eventually, it turned around and came back into the river. They ended up catching it, and I’ll tell you, the look on the grandfather’s face was priceless. It gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. Do you have a personal ‘bucket list’ of fishing trips or experiences? I want to go to Louisiana and go after some redfish. It’s apparently a completely different experience from going after redfish in Florida – the ones in Louisiana are huge.
