Rapala Trophies is a PSP fishing game that has a rather well thought-out control scheme that enables the player to make both reeling and casting somewhat easy to learn, but relatively challenging to master. Once you make your way to a prime location in the game's fishing boat, you are able to view your character from a third person perspective, as well as control the rod using the analog stick. The rod is operated with the left trigger and the right trigger releases the fishing line. A meter at the bottom of the screen that is color coded enables the player to have total control over where and how they will cast.
Once the cast has been made, the camera will switch to an underwater view with a close-up on the lure and a smaller view of the angler from a profile perspective. This allows the player a closer look at the potential bites, while also allowing them to see their character's actions within the boat. There is even an option to view the screen from an over the shoulder camera angle above water.
Using the analog stick, you are able to move the lure around until a possible trophy winning fish will swim up to it to have a closer look. In order to hook a fish, you pull back on the fishing rod and then you must pay careful attention to the tension of the line while reeling the fish in.
Rapala Trophies has an arcade mode, a time trial, many exotic locations, and even fishing tournaments. All of the fishing gear is completely licensed and abundant. Players can even view amazingly created videos that document the history of the company as a bonus feature that is unlockable. While it is not necessarily a big feature, it is still one of many other things that are included in this game that helps make it feel all the more authentic. However, similar to other Rapala games, the characters that you can choose are a strange mix of fishermen that have been previously created.
Rapala lends some rather well done PSP visuals and it is a rather realistic take on fishing environments with a variety of different kinds of waters and vegetation. There are also other animals that can be spotted. Even the water that is splashed up by the boat lingers on the screen for a short period of time. Every fish that is caught is distinct enough for an experienced angler to be able to recognize what species it is. This is truly a remarkable fishing game that allows you to bring the experience of fishing everywhere you go.
