Often beginners to the sport of bass fishing will fish the banks and visual cover like docks, stumps and so on. Some days this works very well, and other times they will not catch a single fish. And when they catch a bass, the next time they are on the water, they will return to the same spot, with the same lure even during a different time of day, month or season and wonder why there ar
One of the best tactics is to match your lure to the local forage the bass are eating. Match the size, color and shape of the forage as closely as you can, and it will produce bass. This is very important in clear water. In the north a tube mimics gobies very well, and in the south and Midwest with the correct color can appear as crawfish or a baitfish. Determining what the forage is and
Hello again to my fellow anglers and ambassadors, the 2013 fishing season is finally heating up here in West Virginia. Over the past few weeks I've been chasing spawning bass around my local lake, and finally the fry have hatched and the big fish are finally biting again. We have been fighting less than perfect conditions here, seems like whenever I try to hook the boat up we encounter a
Have been hitting the tributaries of the Saginaw Bay last week. Decent numbers of fish and good variety. One day I caught 7 different species, anything in the Bay can chase bait up the rivers in the spring. Most of the catch has been White Bass, Smallies and Walleyes. I'm suprised the numbers of legal walleye still in the river this late in the year and after the epic floods we had in April.
In late spring following the spawning activities of bass, the shad and bluegill will be spawning in relation to docks, rock ledges and riprap banks. One of the most productive baits that can cover more water quickly and stay in the strike zone longer in these areas is a crankbait. When fishing these areas boat position is a critical part of your presentation. The key to catching post
While traveling from one fishing spot to the next, you should protect your gear as best as possible without having to pay an arm or a leg. You should keep your rods in cases so they don’t get broken by other heavy gear or set on by that one time fishing buddy. You can make a super rod case made from ordinary PVC pipe sold at plumbing stores. Close one end by se
May 15, 2013 Solid Vancouver Fishing Continues!! Jason @ 7:16 am We have had quite the week of angling. Most of our trips over the last week had great results with good numbers of chinook salmon up to 26 pounds. Most trips are seeing 4 to 10 hook ups a trip! We had a great day locally yesterday hooking 8 legal fish, a couple undersize, and a nice coho! We have been
Recently, we went outside of our box and fished at what is considered one of the best Trophy Bass Lakes on the west coast. It's called Diamond Valley Lake (DVL). We had never been there before and knew that this lake was highly pressured and skunks are common. After launching and getting out on the water, a slight feeling of anxiety began to set in. I was clearly out of my comfort zone with thi
On May 9, 2013 we took are yearly trip to the Chesapeake Bay, in Maryland, with Joe and Janet Rupp of Lucky Duck Charters. As you can see from the picture above we all had a killer day of fishing. Captain Joe and his wife Janet started us off at 5:45 am on our journey for trophy Striped Bass. During this time of the season each angler aboard the boat is allowed to keep one stri
Just got back from 2 weeks fishing Kentucky Lake for the USA Bassin Nitro Classic. it was a long two weeks away from my family. However, we had a good time. We caught great fish during practice, but were unable to come up with those bags of fish on weigh ins. We finished in 101st place with a total weight of just about 21 lbs. we finished just better than half way up the field. It was a great lea
Now the water has warmed up and the spawn has almost passed, bass move from the beds to feed. The warmer water of the post spawn era has increased feeding activity bass that have been guarding their nest. Recuperating largemouth are not yet chasing fast moving baits and will stay in areas that provide quick access to and from deep water partially due to changing weather patterns and the sp
There’s great news for inshore fanatics whose idea of a wet dream is a gaping yellow mouth or a copper back waking on a darting topwater lure. That’s right, pluggers, St. Croix has definitely raised the bar in the production rod department. Their new Legend Inshore Gulf Coast 7-foot medium-light rod out-performs custom sticks costing twice as much. With its moderate action and line ra
Day two of the LBAA Tournament on Tennessee's Old Hickory Lake turned out to be a tougher day of fishing following the front that moved in on day one.
Day one of the LBAA tournament on Old Hickory Lake began with a bang as a thunderstorm rolled in to begin the launch. A day of rain and over cast skies on a lake filled with floating debris, the ladies showed their determination and skill by returning to the weigh in with several limits and several large bass in their live-wells. Each angler had story to tell at the weigh in of
A few weeks back, the Bass bite suddenly shut down at the lake we fish. No one could seem to figure out why. We saw tournament anglers coming off the lake with 3, 4, 5 fish for the day. One thing I had been noticing is that most people are using the latest and greatest baits. In our experience, fish "learn" and they remember. So seeing the same baits all the time with the same presentation could
The Lady Bass Anglers Association has traveled to Tennessee's Old Hickory Lake for the second regular season tournament of the 2013 tour. The registration meeting held today at Barefoot Charlie’s Restaurant in Hendersonville was fun and exciting as the ladies reviewed the rules and regulations and anglers and co-anglers were paired up for the tournament. The event will have t
Many of us have our favorite Pan Fish baits that we carry and I'm no different. Today I had a few hours to kill so I head off to near by lake with some ReelBait 1/4oz Prototype Spoons, 1/8oz ReelBait Original Flasher Jigs, size 4 Zero Twist Shot (drop shot hooks), a 15 pack of XZone Pan Slammer in Red/White and some 1/8 oz Salmo Hornets. Seeing how I didn't have much time I figured that I
I was recently using one of the new Kinchou Minnows from Matzuo. While I was targeting walleye this smallmouth happened to take the lure at Chatfield Reservoir in Littleton, Colorado. This fish had a crawfish lodged in behind its gills and the only thing sticking out happened to be its claws. The action of this lure + the color = the reason why I feel this fish too
Slavien school Kids fishing at Lake Lehow I was a great day with the kids learning how to handle fish with Larry McNeese Volunteer Master Angler for the Colorado Parks and wildlife. The Rain stayed away and the sun came out just for the kids. Plenty of fish caught and released and the kids were able to keep the polls. Kiddos Learning how to cast
1. The Concierge recommended him 2. You and three of your friends end up on a 17 foot bass boat with two seats. 3. The sticker on his boat is from three states away. 4. The cell phone guide, never gets off it while you're not catching fish. 5.I don't need a Captains license, which means he probably doesn't need insurance a business license or to pay taxes either. 6. The I can see the launch

Tonight I went fishing alone as my husband had to work, when i was at the dock others that were fishing was asking me about the types of fish they are catching as they didn't know. There was some guys there that were not fishing with bobbers and the kept going into seaweed. I told them it is better with the bobbers as they wont get much seaweed and a better chance of catching fish. On

Then it changed now im catching the sunfish, perch and bass, its sucks that we can't keep the bass, as that is alot of what im catching. My husband and family is also catching the same but not as much as we have caught. I find that it is 50/550 between the minnows and worms that we use. Im sti
I hear it all the time from visiting anglers how do you get these fish to bite? The chain can be a tough nut to crack and although it looks fishy everywhere the bass can be concentrated into one specific area. When Rick Clunn described the three seasons of bass, Florida had a wild card. While Clunn’s theory is pre spawn, spawn and post spawn largemouth on the chain can be overlapping i

In product testing and interviewing lure manufactures over the last few years, I have become acquainted with several successful businessmen, women and entrepreneurs, and I have witnessed dreams fall apart and good folks losing their entire investments as they leap from a hobby to a business. The fishing industry can be very profitable and it can be tough with relentless with regional

Flying back from the Gulf Islands on Thursday afternoon, crossing the Straight of Georgia in a Grady White Gulf Stream with thirsty twin Mercury 225hp outboards .... I had this amazing feeling come over me. I'm fishing with the Senior people from GibbsDelta Tackle ( Rob Alcock and Syd Pallister) and hearing the Gibbs Delta story first hand from the people who have been at the top s

Great fishing in Pine Island Sound, our catches included local fish such as Sea Bass, Sea Trout, Snook, Redfish, Ladyfish, Cat fish and Tarpon. However, the Tarpon came in 1 week after our fishing excursion. This body of saltwater between Sanibel and Pine Island, provided us with a picture perfect day of fishing coves and inlets tucked in with mangroves, roots and sand bars is
There is always that time of year where the bass go shallow. Males guard the eggs on the nest why the female returns to deeper water. Well, there is two things you can do: fish for the males, or fish for the females. If you chose to stay shallow and fish for the males this is how you do it. First off, the males wont
Byrdstown Tennessee is doing very well in the contest for the Ultimate Fishing Town, a contest sponsored by The World Fishing Network. The city resided in the smallest county by population in the State of Tennessee, and this makes seeing the small city on the leader board alongside some of North America’s top fishing communities such as Cape Hatteras, NC, it is impressive. Being an
When the fishing is slow don’t be afraid to try something different. I can remember once fishing with a buddy, who attached a worm onto the treble hook of a spoon. We all started to tell him that is not the normal way, it will affect the action of the spoon and you just shouldn’t do that and you don’t have a chance to hook any fish. Well, to our surprise he hooks a nice tr
As the water reaches fifty-five degrees and beyond in the spring pre-spawn and post spawn bass begin to react to the changes going on around them. Many anglers have been waiting on these conditions for months to get out on the water and throw top water baits. The top water bite, to many anglers is the most exciting and the most productive type of fishing. Techniques vary by the

The 2013 LPBAA General Meeting was held on Sat April 13 at the Travelodge hotel in Simcoe, Ontario. This year a panel of speakers was on hand to offer presentations on various fishing related topics. Carrie Cartwright of Fishbum Outfitters spoke on "Setting Yourself Up For The Next Big Bite" where she informed the members to "always cast like you're going to catch a fish". Sh
As I was listening to my good friend Joey Monteleone on this morning’s broadcast of Wild Side Radio on WSM, I was impressed by his subject matter of spawning myths. Many folks have opinions on fishing while bass are on the bed, and in areas with no closed season the topic is controversial to say the least. Most anglers do what they feel is the right thing, while other fish for
Classic Lure tips are easy to find. These lures have been around a long time, and the reason for that is because they do the job. One of my favorite classic lures is the Rebel Pop-R. It is probably another lure you remember from your father or grandfathers tackle box. Referred to as “plugs”, these classic lures have been catching bass for more than three deca
I just got some new jigs a few weeks ago, now I was never big on jigs but i'm looking forward to trying these. The have changeable heads so instead of having to tie and cut and retie i just change the heads in a matter of seconds and keep right on fishing. They are made by Lindy which is great and called Xchange jig system i actually have about 20 different heads and about 30 hooks so i think no
The Second Annual “I Wanna Fish Too” Youth Event that was held near Nashville last weekend was a fun day for all involved. To see the face of a child when they catch their first fish is one of the most rewarding experiences an angler can have. The day was filled with laughter, music, fun, food and of course fish. The sponsors and the adults that volunteered and worked so hard
Day four was spent scraping the front deck, this was best done by scraping it dry with the 14-in-1 tool then following it with the acetone. The acetone works for you in two ways, it helps to soften to glue and it also cleans the fiberglass allowing you to see spots of glue that you may have missed. After I did a quick move around the deck with the scraper I then used a broom to get any of the fin
Day three of the Project Poncho build was a day of hard labor, though you may not see it we have spent many hours scraping the aluminum lids until they became spotless, the fiberglass proved to be a different beast entirely. When I first began scraping on the fiberglass flooring it came off extremely easily after being exposed to the open air. While the large majority of the rear deck, lids includ
On day two of the Project Poncho build we spent about an hour stripping the carpet from the floor and the rear deck. This really took no time at all due to the glue losing all hold due to being exposed to the elements for a number of years. I do apologize for the lack of images for day two but we do have video!
Spring has finally come, and the ice is melting away. Now it’s time to do some Trout fishing. Trout are top or bottom feeders. That is they normally feed at the surface, or just below it, or near the bottom. Fish the percentage areas and don’t waste time fishing the middle. So right after “ice out” in the spring,
This is a recipe for catfish that we got to try out last summer, you can keep 4 under 24 inches where i live, none over. We had 2 under that length on that day but the rest were over so this was supper with the 2 we kept. A friend made it but here are the steps and best guesses at ingredients. Catch some catfish, once home rinse with cold water cleaning them well, then rinse with som
Well all I can say is that this has been a great 2013. Not alone has my ice fishing and steelheading gone well, but I have picked up a few sponsors along the way!! Have been out sucker fishing a couple of times in the past week. The water was a bit cool still 38 degrees the first time out, but it had warmed up to 41 the next time. I was able catch a couple nice fat ones both times out. Now we have a lot of rain and the rivers are blown for a while.
In the spring crappie will begin the migration to shallow areas once the water temperatures have warmed up to forty-five to fifty degrees, schooling near the mouths of creeks until the water temperature rises to fifty-five degrees. This migration process is already under way in much of North America, and this is the time that anglers can find them migrating to the shallower spa
During an interview with Bassmaster Elite Pro Hank Cherry following his fourth place victory at the 2013 Classic, he gave me an outstanding recommendation for a spinnerbait that I had been hearing much about on the social media sites, The Death Shimmer from Law Lures. Hank told me that this spinnerbait is like no other spinnerbait out there. The vibration and water displacement (due t
The Rainbow Trout is a colourfull, feisty and tasty fish, it is pursued by a variety of anglers for those reasons and many more. Typically they cruise around when hungry, sometimes in good numbers, looking for anything they can get in their mouths. Other days they are sitting on the bottom resting with full bellies not interested in anything you throw at them. I've caught t
Great News for Pink salmon anglers! The return of Pink salmon in 2011 for the Fraser river and Vancouver area rivers was very impressive, the Fraser return alone was about 30 million(these fish were the parents of the upcoming 2013's return). This means that the 2013 return should be another massive return likely in the 20-40 million range. Pinks will start showing up in the
The words 'salmon farming' conjures up nightmares for many on Canada's 2 coasts but few know the inner workings of this industry and the bed sharing that has been going on between the Norwegian salmon farming industry and the Canadian government that serves to protect profits and at any cost to the survival of wild salmon. Watch Salmon Confidential today. Salmon Confidential is a new
Here are a few spinners made by using the tabs from energy drink cans. Here's a picture of the components needed to make these pan fish/trout sized spinners: Beads, a paper clip, a split shot and a size 6 hook. Make a hole in the small end of the tab using a panel nail. At this point the shaft is made by straightening out the paper clip and putting a loop on the one end.
Now that the water is finally warming after a late start to spring the bass are beginning to move up on the humps and ledges and to and from shallow spawning areas as the water temperature rises between 49 and 53 degrees. I am seeing pictures of some nice bass from around North America and that tells me that it will not be long until the spawn is on. The late spring could possibly c
Once again this year, anglers from Canada and USA will face each other during 48 hours of fishing in a row. This year's competition will take place in Long Sault, Ontario from July 26 to 28. The Long Sault area is well know for the quality of carp fishing, so all dreams are possible. Basic rules goes like this: One member from Team USA and one member from Team Canada will be pegged togeather
Knowing how much thrust you need from a trolling motor to propel your boat doesn't have to be confusing. Anglers must understand the needed amount of power to move their boat the water is described in "pounds of thrust". This rating of power is an industry standard to almost all trolling motor companies. It is important to match the size of your boat with the correct amount of thrust. Wit
I was finally able to get out this past Saturday to test out the new position of the fish finder transducer. It was a duel purpose trip. 1- to test out the transducer and 2- to fish for some early spring stripers. I launched out of Laurence Harbor, NJ. First the transducer. Right off the bat I noticed it was reading in real shallow water. About 2'. With the transducer mounted in the hull
This is a collection of the top 20 spring tips that I have tried and tested over the last several years. Sharing this basic information often makes me realize how many things I over look or take for granted when I am on the water. Spring is the best time to be a fisherman, and taking the time to enjoy the earth waking up only enhances the experience. 1. Thro
So as you guys know spring is here, but unusually cold for the time of year here in Miami, Florida. But every day is a great day to fish, so I will share with you what i do to prep for some spring/summer fishing action. First off I make sure the car is well serviced because the last thing i would need it to not make it to the spot because of some type of failure due to negligence. Secondly I woul

Reports began to surface Saturday morning about the passing away of the bass fishing legend Doug Hannon, who many of us knew as The Bass Professor. Mr. Hannon is believed to have passed away Friday in Florida. The quote from his friend George Medders posted on The Bass Professor Facebook wall was only this, “I'm sorry to say Doug Hannon (The Bass Professor) passed away last nig
Every year I buy the latest soft plastic baits only to use them once or twice if they don't produce fish right away. My go to baits for quite a few years have been Berkley Gulp 3" Shrimp, Berkley Gulp 4" Swimming mullet, D.O.A. C.A.L. 3" Shad Tail & C.A.L. 4" Jerk Bait. I use these baits 75 % of the time on a leadhead, bucktail jig, swimbait hook or a unweighted hook. Most of the
Happy Easter... He has Risen!!!! Report Abuse Posted On April 08, 2012 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. Matthew 4:19 Happy Easter. ... Peace of the Lord be with you! Stay Salty My Friends!
I just checked my last blog. It's been a year. I'm at the same point I was last year at this time. I have to figure out where the new equipment is going in the boat. Like most of you guys/gals I buy threw the winter. I start saving as soon as I lay down the rod and winterized the boat. I look for for some good deals as money is tight and I want to get the most with what I have to spend. I did wel
Now that the lakes have begun to warm the bass are on the move from the main lake points to the spawning flats they will stage on the secondary points and use grass lines for cover. The fish are seeking the optimal condition for the spawn in preparation for the longer warmer days to come. Rogue bass will be seen cruising the spawning flats, but the larger females will be schooled by
Skin cancer is on the rise and melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer. Passionate anglers spend a lot of time in the sun unprotected from the dangerous rays. Cancerous growths tend to develop when unrepaired DNA damage to skin cells that is most often caused by (UV) ultraviolet radiation from direct sunshine or from artificial means of tanning in tanning beds that t
You know that trade shows are a great place to see and buy new gear and such but it is also a great place to meet other anglers and trade fishing tips. I talked to lots of fellow anglers and its surprise me how much information can be obtained if you just open up and talk while looking at gear. That one person that I was fortuned enough to meet at the Dieppe Fly Fishing
A tip I was given long ago was to look for differant lures to fish with. There are times when an angler has to give bass something they have never seen before especially on pressured lakes. Mature bass become conditioned to familiar lures and repeated presentations to the point that they will shy away from the same old thing. This is one reason that catching large bass can be difficu
A few years back I was told that if the spruce trees produce a bunch of cones over the summer, that means next summer will be hot and dry. And if they produce little to no cones over the summer, that means it will be a cold, wet summer next year. I thought it was hogwash, but decided to take note of the summer's pine cones, spruce cones, and cedar cones just in case. I had never payed attenti
As you know one thing I like to do when I’m at trade shows is talk to family run business. So this year while at the Dieppe Fly Fishing Forum I had the pleasure of talking with Steve B. (as he likes to be called) from Reelflies.ca Now as soon as you enter their booth you could see a difference in their flies compared to others and Steve said “The difference is simply be
This was my first time Ice fishing it was awesome, to go out with my husband and brother-in-law. Have to tell you about the great show I took in last weekend in Moncton N.B. It was actually three shows in one; there was a boat show, the N.B. Sportsman show and the Dieppe Fly-fishing Forum. There were lots and lots of information and gear and ahh, you name it, and it was there. It was actually too much to handy in one day but the one thing I was really impressed with was
All across North America, bass are moving to shallow water to feast on emerging crawfish and for a very good reason, they need the nutrients before bedding. Bass instinctively know that crawfish have about seven times the nutritional value than that of shad and other bait fish as well as a high concentration of calcium, and this is needed for the bass to have a healthy spawn. Anglers
Getting Started: Buying a Redfish Boat
Another wintery storm has blown through the prairies pushing my passion for spring/summer time fishing even further away. The aftermath of the storm always creates a cold drop in temperature, full sun though, but today reaching a low of -31c with the wind chill. Brrrrrr! This creates havoc even for the true and hardy ice fishing anglers as they need to compensate for the ever thickening a

A mistake a lot of anglers make in early spring is live bait and lure size. They go to the bait shop and buy small minnows thinking it will Help the bite. Most of the minnows in spring are bigger because they are the ones that made it through the winter. There may be some smaller minnows but there hasn't been a hatch yet so they are also left from the previous season. This season give medium and

The sky was clear and the stars bright as we waited for our ride to the days fishing destination, another road trip my wife and I had both been looking forward to. With the vehicle loaded by 5:15 A.M., we were on our way to a body of water none of us had fished before. We had been targeting perch a few times this winter, usually having days with good numbers and steady action b

This past Sunday I took the kayak out. The plan was to launch out of South Amboy, NJ and fish the Raritan Bay for Striped Bass with a few others. When we got there the wind was blowing pretty good and it was cold. The longer we waited the colder it got and the bigger the whitecaps got. Figures, the wind was worse and the temps were coder than the weatherman predicted. Should be used to that
