Finally the owner of the shack I was using show up and even thou he was sorry I had to go, I believe he put me out of my misery. I ended up getting 7, yes 7 smelts, not a good day, as the wife informed me that's 7 smelts in 7 hours. But I was out and I tried and maybe there will be a good run on the next time. Again it beats work... FISH-ON! Cookster

When trout are repeatedly rising for flies, My "Floating Menace" is the pattern to try. Tied parachute style, this fly is absolutely deadly when fish are feeding on insects trapped in the surface. The thing that sets parachute flies apart is the way the hackle is tied around a wing post, which sits upright at 90 degrees to the hook shank. ...FISH-ON!
This is the "fluttering" type of Mayfly. It is tied just contrary to a conventional fly; that is, the head of the fly starts at the rear of the hook instead of at the front of the hook. Tying a fly in this manner gives it a fluttering erratic action when slowly retrieved through the water. ... FISH-ON!
This is the Thames River, in Southern Ontario, and its full of pike and bass and many other species to be fished. Get your lines wet and come have a time.

I didn't catch any fish. Just staying in practice I guess. Any time you can fish in January in Kentucky it's a good day. I just really wanted to test my new rod and reel. So, I didn't really go where I know the fish are this time. Still would have been nice to catch just one. You know what I'm talking about. You've been there, done that.

On our way to the Cabin we had to pull a 200lb sled with all our essentials on it for the weekend. It was loaded with canned soup, water, beer, butter, and other foods to hold us over, plus other things we may have needed. It was a struggle getting there but we made it. We fished for a couple days in -18 degree to -25 degree celcius weather and only got a couple pike to bite. It was fun and we

Here's one technique on how to catch rainbow smelts. We were on the Kennebecasis River in Rothesay, New Brunswick. The weather was -29 degrees celcius with the windchill, so in these extreme conditions we opted to pitch an old tent and convert it into a homemade ice shelter. Lots of fun!

Changes affecting spotted seatrout include: Redefining the areas where spotted seatrout are managed by splitting the state into four management zones instead of three; The recreational season will be open year-round statewide; Raising the recreational bag limit in Northeast Florida from five to six.
Changes affecting red drum include: The creation of three management zones for red drum instead of one statewide management area. The areas represent the northwest, northeast and southern sections of the state's waters; Increasing from one to two the number of red drum that a recreational fisherman can take per day in the Northeast and Northwest zones; Establishing a statewide vessel limit of eigh
The recreational harvest season for snook reopens Wednesday in Florida's Atlantic coastal and inland waters, including Lake Okeechobee and the Kissimmee River. Anglers may keep one snook between 28 and 32 inches in length per day in the allowable harvest areas only.
Good crappie fishing is not an oxymoron in B.C.
If banning the Alabama rig is the solution, what is the problem?
Vaseux Lake is one of the most underrated bass fisheries in the province, and there's a good reason for that.
Right now, the fish have been near St Road 46 at Lee’s crossing, especially near the mouth of the Econolohatchi River (Econ for short) where it empties into the St. Johns River. The areas near the bridge have produced up to two dozen shad per angler, along with good catches of black crappie and even some striped bass. There have also been fish spread out near Mullet Lake.
I'll be guiding this season in the sunny South Okanagan, check out this article to find out more about the great fishing opportunities in the area.
2012 may be The Year of the Dragon in the Chinese calendar, but for bass anglers there is no question it is The Year of the Alabama Rig.
2012 is here and so is a new fishing season! In Eastern Canada, there are three way we can fish- through the ice in rivers or hop on a plan and fly south! The four day stretch of sailfish action of Florida’s East Coast will be remembered as one of the best stretches of sailfish action on record. Those numbers only reflect the fish caught in two tournaments. Exactly how many fish were caught and released by recreational anglers during the same time period is a number that will remain moot, as one of the best years of sailfish action off Florida goes
Since Florida is a large peninsular state running north and south, real winter is something a portion of northern Floridians experience in fractions. And though it’s nothing like winter in say, New Hampshire, the grass does turn brown and the ocean and Gulf temperatures drop below the acceptable heiney immersion rates.
One of the things I emphasize at my ice fishing seminars is the importance of running and gunning on the ice in the winter time.
Jeff Weltz drops some knowledge on steelhead flies, talking about some of the classic patterns that take these majestic fish.

Let's face it, most folks have never caught a ten-pound walleye, the size generally regarded in Walleyedom as the Holy Grail. Indeed, I know many highly-skilled, fulltime, FLW touring walleye pros who have never caught a double digit 'eye.
The clear waters of Salt Spring Island's St. Mary Lake harbour some of the best smallmouth action in Western Canada.

There's no bait that's accounted for more 10+ pound bass in the last ten years than swimbaits, and they catch the big ones here in Canada too.
Starting tomorrow, December 15, the recreational harvest of snook in Florida will close in all Atlantic coastal and inland waters, including Lake Okeechobee and the Kissimmee River. Snook season will reopen in Atlantic state and federal waters on February 1, 2012.
Ice is finally starting to cover our lakes up here in Northwestern Ontario, but open water conditions still prevail in southern Ontario, especially in and around the Great Lakes. Combine that with an extended muskie season in many parts of the country, and anglers have one last chance to catch the fish of a lifetime.
Duck Lake near Creston, BC is a shallow, weedy largemouth paradise where big fish rumours and topwater action abound.
Kokanee salmon are one of the best eating fish there is, here's all you need to know to target them for yourself.

Offshore—The late season dolphin bite has been very consistent throughout the Florida Keys, with most of the fish being caught under 20-pounds, although there seem to be schoolies everywhere, although the most consistent action has been in 300 to 500 feet of water. Sailfish action has been very inconsistent, with most boats only getting one or two shots at the fish each day, and a lot of those opp

I spent a day on Lake Ontario last summer downrigging for trout and salmon and it was one of those hot as heck and very bright days. Blue bird skies and not a cloud in sight. The sun was coming at me from every angle, and the glare on the water was incredibly strong. The great thing about these days is that the sun helps with throwing a really good flash off the lure to get the fishes attent

Fall time is tributary time. Time to put the boat away and brake out the long sticks. This fall has been very rewarding having a lot of success on numerous rivers. If you've never fished for brown and rainbow trout before, you can't beat the feeling you get when you hook your first tail walking salmonid of the season. Timing is key! Wait for a big blast of rain and make your way down to th
A lot of my fishing is done on big water; whether its Lake Ontario, Niagara River, Lake Nipigon or Lake Erie, staying dry and comfortable plays a huge factor in a successful day of fishing. I know from experience, and I'm sure most anglers can agree, being cold and wet does not motivate you to be out in the elements trying to catch fish. I was in the market for a good quality rain suit a
One of the many issues of concern for the fishing and hunting community is recruitment, or, more specifically, the greying of our ranks. In short, we are continually striving to bring new anglers and hunters, particularly youth, into the fold. And more and more, the outdoors community has also been targeting woman as potential new outdoorsfolk of tomorrow. And that’s a good thing. In fact
5 Tips and Tricks to put more Salmon in your boat Downrigging for Salmon doesn’t have to be like solving a rubix cube. In this article I will discuss 5 basic things you should know about (without going into great detail) that
Being out on the water a lot, it’s been my general observation that most boaters do not wear their pfd’s while running the boat or while fishing. Whenever I am out on the boat, my first priority is making sure that safety is number one. I spend a lot of time on big waters, Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, and Lake Simcoe, these waters are known for not being very forgiving claimin
Lake Vernon (Huntsville, Ontario) has recently been the site of a bizarre fish bite in a normally peaceful cottage setting. Muskoka's Cottage Country Now recently reported that on July 15, 2011 a swimming pre-schooler's foot was bitten by a fish while in the water with her parents. The youngster was taken to local Huntsville Hospital for treatment to multiple foot lacerations. The article sug
Where do I begin…..it’s always been my plan to one day make it to Nipigon and fish for trophy Brook Trout, in fact small stream Brookies were one of the first fish I avidly targeted. Catching 6-12 inch Brookies was always a treat when I was a kid; there was nothing better to me. Growing up, I had read many articles and books on Brook Trout and they all pointed to one magi

Awesome. Sweet. Dude. Those are the three new words my Dad says he learned during our four days of fishing at northern Saskatchewan’s Milton Lake Lodge (we got back to Ontario on Tuesday). That’s hardly surprising, given we were hanging with Nick Pujic, the hip young principal of Fly Max Films and Fly Nation TV (think surfer culture meets fly fishing), and our guide Naoto Aoki.

On Lake Ontario the regulation states that for every one angler, you can have two rods. Well this trip to Maryland's Chesapeake Bay was much less productive for me than in 2009. The tidal fishery whooped my butt this time around. Once again I fished for smallmouth in the Susquehanna River however it was a different time of year than last year and those big fish just weren't around. After practice I knew this was going to be a brutal event and just catching a limit each day would pro

My answer --- They could charge twice as much and I would still have two on my boat. Everywhere I go I get asked "what are those things sticking up on the back of your boat?" What an interesting Spring we’ve had; bitter cold and endless amounts of rain. It was hard to believe that Trout Opener was just around the corner. The week prior was spent scouting, checking weather, tying roe and going over my gear to ensure that nothing would go wrong on that day. It's always great when you can fish a tournament with only two rods on the deck and this was one of those times. To me, teaching a man to paint to impress the human eye is great. Teaching a man to create his own lure that will fool a wary fish to strike - is art. There is no question in my mind that tying your own flies or creating and painting your own lures adds a new dynamic to fishing that many of us have never experienced. For angler, blogger and lure creator, Tommy Ellis, it happens all

Day two we had a lot more wind and it was coming out of the east. It had been out of the west for several days and I knew this would change things up on me. When you get a change in wind direction it most often will reposition fish and with smallmouth this can be a move of several miles. Well this day it hadn’t moved all my fish out of that area but there wasn’t the same numbers and t
There was very little wind on day one of the tournament which made the run real nice. But I still had no idea how long it would take me to get back because the river doesn’t get nasty until later in the day when all the boat traffic and big barges come out. So I was hoping to get a good sack early so I could take my time going in and not have to push it. Well the bite wasn’t on fire b
The second Bassmaster event of the year was in Detroit where we launched in the Detroit River with the ability to fish Lake Erie, the Detroit River, Lake St. Clair or the St. Clair River. This tournament I knew would be a huge challenge going in. The last time I fished Lake St. Clair was more than ten years ago. I fished as an amateur in the Canadian Open back when I was 14 years old, which obvio
Fishing beads are becoming a staple in every Steelheaders arsenal of tricks to fool trout into taking the bait. Some anglers take it one step further and use the bead on every set up to act as an attractor to whatever is tied on at the end of the hook; be it a fly, spawn sac or jig. Last fall I really put them to the test and when an egg bite would be on, they held up just as

Well in the last post I mentioned the lures I had to throw out because of the rust. Well it was the lack of quality in the stuff at the store and the lack of the size of lure I wanted also. Big Northern Pike like a big meal. However they will settle for a snack if it's present and easy to take. I was considering all sorts of variables and what if's, and thinking about what I wanted most in
Got out to do some smelt spearing for the first time this winter down Big Island. It was a really nice day, -3 degrees and the sun was out most of the day. No problem finding a good shack to use, matter of fact, I moved around and check out a few others in the first 3 hours looking for smelts ending up back at the first one, with no luck. Nobody even seen a smelt which ma

This is my review of the Intex Seahawk 4 inflatable boat. I purchased one of these last summer and it is one of the best purchases I have made. It will hold up to 4 adults and carry up to 880 pounds. It is made of thick rubber that is almost hook proof. I hooked it a couple times and had no worries, not even close to puncturing it. you can purchase
hey folks this is my first post in what I hope to be a weekly blog. As the snow begins to melt, I start to think of the upcoming fishing seasons. I am not one to go ice fishing, so I have a long dull winter to deal with, but as soon as January 1st comes around I start to check through all my tackle, restring my rods, and plan my first few trips out. This
Some of my favorite while fishing with my older Brother Bobby on the Columbia River. These fish made my week while fishing with him. Only had about two real good days fishing, because of the rain. These were caught just off the Hood River on the Columbia. We trolled Wobblers on the bottom with Herring tied to the lure. It was interesting how we were aloud to fish giving the right of way to the
Hi Ya folks, It's been a while. I got lost for a bit. Spring is hopefully just around the corner. We all know what that means. Time to dig in and get out your gear and see what you need or what you don't need or should I say what wasn't productive last year. We have to set aside, not throw or give away but set aside the few that just didn't make the cut if you will.. You know th

This is a great winter warm up, it's a tomato based chowder with a little zip! Chop 1 small onion, 3-4 stalks of celery, 2-3 garlic cloves minced. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil over medium heat and saute onion, celery and garlic for 3-4 minutes. Chop 1 red pepper and add to celery and onions, saute for 3 more minutes. Add 1, 28 oz can of tomatoes and 3 cups of clamato juice (or tomato juice), add
I was given the chance a while ago to test out a new product called "NokOut". It is a scent eliminator llike some that you may see in the hunting department of your local outdoor sports store. But this stuff works! I figured the best way to test this out is to do it slowly over time in real life situations, not the normal little experiments. With 2 boys and two big dogs at home it was pret
The New York Coalition for Recreational Fishing used to put together a 1st class fishing expo every year at Farmingdale College. I would look forward to their show every year. I was glad to find out that I would be in NY this year and I would be able to go to the show. I paid the adm
I'm one of those guys that actually likes keeping score. I'm not a tournament fisherman, so even though I spend a small fortune on my fishing passion (Ok, addiction)... It's not the money that I track. It's the biggest fish of each species that matters to me. Now, even though I fish everything from shallow creeks to deep lakes, Iconsider myself to be primarily a river fisherman. My personal best
Offshore the bite was slow but putting in your time showed some results. Dorado and BFT in 250-400 feet on the troll. Bare/skirted ballyhoo produced some bites. On the reefs and wrecks, mutton and yellowtail snapper in 40-110 feet Kingfish and sailfish were in 90-180 feet to the north. Live baits, sardines and cut baits were the baits of choice. Cobia were in the area also. Nearshor
The Story of the Catch and Release of the Tennessee State Record Largemouth By: Lance Walker By: Lance Walker By now most bass enthusiast have heard of Lance Walker and his amazing 16 (+) pound largemouth bass that he caught on Pickwick Lake a few days ago. According to the measurements, Terri Battsitti whom studied measurements and fish for in-fishermen to form a calculation for
What a day it was… The day began with a morning spent with Bob Westmorland, the brother of bass fishing legend, Billy Westmorland, who shared story with me about the early days of Dale Hollow and fishing with his brother as kids for the legendary old brown fish. I am looking forward to writing those stories and sharing with the WFN and Facebook readers. &nbs
Today, Lee Padrick and I attended the Raleigh Boat show at the Convention Center and learned of a new tournament series in North Carolina with events stretching from Carolina Beach to Beaufort. Tournament brochure reads: "5 Events / 3 Heaviest Fish / 2 Champions Each of the five tournaments in the series offers lots of great payouts and prizes, captains' parties and award dinners, bonus

Ice has been a premuim this winter in Mid-michigan, but I headed up to the Harrison area for some ice fishing. There was about 9in of ice. I caught a few perch but the fishing was mostly slow. It was a change to be fishing with a jacket unzipped and no gloves in the beggining of Feb.
Took my 'new to me' kayak out yesterday for some fishing. Caught not only my first bass from a kayak, but my first fish EVER from a kayak. In fact, it was my first time ever fishing from a yak. I caught it on a jig with a rubber trailer around some submerged trees. I had the jig sitting on the bottom as I was moving the yak into position. I didn't feel the hit, it was VERY subtle and just fel
went out today for the first time very slow but landed one pike good sign for the first time out this year. anyone know of any good spots within the woodstock area.
Late winter days of February can be an exciting time to fish for pre-spawn bass. The month is known for big fish being caught by those anglers that are ready to get out in the cold to fish for them. Anglers are successful using various techniques that suit the cover and structure of certain lakes. For some anglers there is no better target area than winter grass beds. &nbs
Here are a few accomplishment! over a few years, which I am proud to share with you. I entered a tournament in 2004, SEBO, South Eastern Bass Open, and placed 3rd! Wow!! I was hooked ! I joined Renegade Bass, in 2004 and 2005, All though it is sometimes hard to find a steady partner, and I do not have a bassboat, I decided to fish as a co-ang
Ever what a a jig with a certain size hook and brand but had to make them yourself or do without. What about blades, something different than the rest of the crowd or in a different blade size. While I am about to like the cat out of the bag. This past season (2010) I found that custom tackle maker and boy was I glad I did. I needed some 3/8 oz. jigs with 5/0 hooks (Gamakatsu) and

Well, I haven't been able to get out and fish lately. I've had a lot going on lately, including school. Finally out of school for a little bit, and a trip or two is in the near future. First, I will heading out in the next week or so to catch up on some local fishing. But what I'm really looking forward to is the Chokoloskee Boondoggle with yakangler.com We'll be heading
In this post I wanted to share with you a short story by my friend Darrell Shell. Darren and I shared a high school class room and an interest in art together many years ago. Back in those days, I don’t think either of us realized that we also shared a common interest in fishing as well. Both of our families ran marinas on the legendary small mouth fishery, Dale Hollow Lake, but some

Hello Everyone! Well since this is my first post please allow me to introduce myself. Hey guys, I had the fishing fever this past Friday, so I went down to a local pond to try my luck. Water clearity was maybe 2 feet, water temp was in the low to mid 50's and the buck bass were cruising the banks. Normally this time of year I start out with what I call a pre-pre spawn pattern witch usually consist of lipless cranks and jigs around deeper structure. Today was no exception, but I ne
Sorry for the poor photo quality on my pics i think i've resolved my problem and will be re-posting my images.
Greetings fellow fishermen and fisherwomen, Another new member to the WFN site. And all the way from a small island in the south pacific. My main fishing activity is from the beach, though I have been known to wander out on a boat from time to time. My fishing gear is limited, I have one custom built one piece pole (I also forget its called a fishing pole in some parts of the w
Still cold here in New England, but we've had it pretty easy so far in central CT. No snow on the ground and thin ice every where so it won't be long now. So, I'm gearing up for late winter/early spring fishing and breaking out the jerk-baits. Late winter, if you can find open water, and early spring, are when I like to throw jerk-baits. The fish seem to really respond to this bait during t
Spent some time getting my gear cleaned up... again... all the reels are cleaned oiled and greased and ready to go just need spring to get here so the bronze backs can tear my gear up for another great season. Being an avid Trout fisherman here in Ontario Canada, I use small ultra light spinning poles to explore all the small trout streams this area has to offer. Many of the streams are tight and narrow with small pools overgrown with vegetation and can be quite challenging to fish. Over the years I’ve learned that the ultra light poles could offer me the finesse that was need to make
Way to go Mikey!! I'm voting everyday for you and Nicholas! Your favourite Fraulein, xo
I was sitting at home today thinking about fishing; as usual, and I got to thinking about a local company that is making stuff for every season. It seems sometimes like companies make a product for a specific season or just one fish, or type of fishing. Not these guys. I am talking about Dynamic Lures. I have been on Pro Staff with them for almost a year, and they just amaze me.

I was going through some the Ambassador posts and was inspired by Rick Clark’s post about taking a trip down memory lane. My Dad grew up in Port Elgin and spent almost all of his spare time on the water and it was a passion he passed onto my sisters and I. Dad taught me how to fish on Rice Lake while visiting my Uncle Bob and Aunt Sandy when I was about 2 or 3. I had a cute little Mickey
I was on shore casting towards the bank of the lake, now I wasn't on a great lake or anything like that but i was behind my house in a stocked lake. this lake is a good fishery and i think its great for everybody from pro anglers to beginners but any way I usually use better lures but over the past few days I have been using the Rapala original floater (Gold).there is a way to work th
every year in June my 2 brothers, my nephews and my son go to Spooner WI for our annual fishing trip, a bonding trip, the last day I was throwing a jointed rapala and landed a nice 4lb Bass, when bringing in the fish jumped and stuck the trebile in my finger, took the Bill Dance hook remover and popped it out, alittle blood little pain, that's fishing
We are currently in a transition period here in Central Florida. Rainy July and August have our lakes up and now with the dew points getting lower in the evenings the water temparture is going down. Fish should be moving from their summer deep water to the shallows very soon. This is the time of year we get schooling bass and it is not uncommon to catch 5 with over 6 lb average in a less than thi

Last long weekend my Boyfriend didn't want to say he got skunked so he caught my flip flop I know it has been a while I've been busy with work and family and haven't had time to sit down and write a blog but I want to know what is going on for Labour Day! For most Labour Day marks the unofficial end of summer. The kids will soon be lugging around school bags instead of tackle boxes and dissectin
Thursday, July 21, 2011 BIRD BANGING BULRUSHES by John McKean Ever adventurous, 26 year old Sandy, a gal-pal of son Sean, ignored my advise to NOT penetrate the bulrushes for better casting position. Had I been even slightly more specific about the 6' black snake that loved to lounge in the cool soft mud therein I wouldn't have felt quite so guilty over the horrific scream, sky high

Hi again, I had a busy day at work, stressful and then I had to do the boring but, very necessary shopping for groceries and other errands. After we finished shopping, my wife seeing that I was stressed out suggested that I take some time and go fishing to relax, decompress and clear my head. Yes, my loving, caring and awesome wife suggested this.... She is so, understanding,
