I've always said it is better to be "lucky" than "good", which was the case again yesterday afternoon, when my deadstick rod, perched across the top of a pail, with the tip hung over the hole, out-fished me at least two to one!
Lake Okeechobee—Randall Tharp caught a four-day bag of 101-pounds, 12-ounces to win the FLW tournament last week on Lake Okeechobee, testimony to that the big lake is back to historic proportions. Sun protection on the water It’s not a secret anymore - the sun’s UV rays can be harmful and for those who spend a lot of time angling – the sun can be deadly. Changes affecting spotted seatrout include: Redefining the areas where spotted seatrout are managed by splitting the state into four management zones instead of three; The recreational season will be open year-round statewide; Raising the recreational bag limit in Northeast Florida from five to six.
Changes affecting red drum include: The creation of three management zones for red drum instead of one statewide management area. Good crappie fishing is not an oxymoron in B.C.
If banning the Alabama rig is the solution, what is the problem?
Vaseux Lake is one of the most underrated bass fisheries in the province, and there's a good reason for that.
Right now, the fish have been near St Road 46 at Lee’s crossing, especially near the mouth of the Econolohatchi River (Econ for short) where it empties into the St. Johns River. The areas near the bridge have produced up to two dozen shad per angler, along with good catches of black crappie and even some striped bass. There have also been fish spread out near Mullet Lake.
I'll be guiding this season in the sunny South Okanagan, check out this article to find out more about the great fishing opportunities in the area.
2012 may be The Year of the Dragon in the Chinese calendar, but for bass anglers there is no question it is The Year of the Alabama Rig.

The four day stretch of sailfish action of Florida’s East Coast will be remembered as one of the best stretches of sailfish action on record. Those numbers only reflect the fish caught in two tournaments. Exactly how many fish were caught and released by recreational anglers during the same time period is a number that will remain moot, as one of the best years of sailfish action off Florida goes
Since Florida is a large peninsular state running north and south, real winter is something a portion of northern Floridians experience in fractions. And though it’s nothing like winter in say, New Hampshire, the grass does turn brown and the ocean and Gulf temperatures drop below the acceptable heiney immersion rates.
One of the things I emphasize at my ice fishing seminars is the importance of running and gunning on the ice in the winter time.

Let's face it, most folks have never caught a ten-pound walleye, the size generally regarded in Walleyedom as the Holy Grail. Indeed, I know many highly-skilled, fulltime, FLW touring walleye pros who have never caught a double digit 'eye.

With the first EverStart event over. Cooler weather and high winds brought low weights on day one by Okeechobee standards. But day two prove to be a different story, with weights as high as 35lbs. Day two leader Brandon Medlock went on to win for the second year in a row. His double weed guard jig that his father makes was the major lure he use to help him win. Other techniques were used such as
I spent a day on Lake Ontario last summer downrigging for trout and salmon and it was one of those hot as heck and very bright days. Blue bird skies and not a cloud in sight. The sun was coming at me from every angle, and the glare on the water was incredibly strong. The great thing about these days is that the sun helps with throwing a really good flash off the lure to get the fishes attent

Fall time is tributary time. Time to put the boat away and brake out the long sticks. This fall has been very rewarding having a lot of success on numerous rivers. If you've never fished for brown and rainbow trout before, you can't beat the feeling you get when you hook your first tail walking salmonid of the season. Timing is key! Wait for a big blast of rain and make your way down to th
A lot of my fishing is done on big water; whether its Lake Ontario, Niagara River, Lake Nipigon or Lake Erie, staying dry and comfortable plays a huge factor in a successful day of fishing. I know from experience, and I'm sure most anglers can agree, being cold and wet does not motivate you to be out in the elements trying to catch fish. I was in the market for a good quality rain suit a
One of the many issues of concern for the fishing and hunting community is recruitment, or, more specifically, the greying of our ranks. In short, we are continually striving to bring new anglers and hunters, particularly youth, into the fold. And more and more, the outdoors community has also been targeting woman as potential new outdoorsfolk of tomorrow. And that’s a good thing. In fact
5 Tips and Tricks to put more Salmon in your boat Downrigging for Salmon doesn’t have to be like solving a rubix cube. Keeping it simple can put fish in the boat; however, become a good Salmon fisherman on the Great Lakes takes time, experience and attention to detail. In this article I will discuss 5 basic things you should know about (without going into great detail) that
Being out on the water a lot, it’s been my general observation that most boaters do not wear their pfd’s while running the boat or while fishing. Whenever I am out on the boat, my first priority is making sure that safety is number one. I spend a lot of time on big waters, Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, and Lake Simcoe, these waters are known for not being very forgiving claimin
Lake Vernon (Huntsville, Ontario) has recently been the site of a bizarre fish bite in a normally peaceful cottage setting. Muskoka's Cottage Country Now recently reported that on July 15, 2011 a swimming pre-schooler's foot was bitten by a fish while in the water with her parents. The youngster was taken to local Huntsville Hospital for treatment to multiple foot lacerations. The article sug
Where do I begin…..it’s always been my plan to one day make it to Nipigon and fish for trophy Brook Trout, in fact small stream Brookies were one of the first fish I avidly targeted. Catching 6-12 inch Brookies was always a treat when I was a kid; there was nothing better to me. Growing up, I had read many articles and books on Brook Trout and they all pointed to one magi
I love introducing people to salmon fishing. It’s easy, its laid back and loads of fun. When I had the opportunity to take my younger cousin out for the day, I knew it would be a blast. He’s not an avid angler by any means; however, he’s good company and I just wanted to show him what Lake Ontario had to offer. Many people have no clue what opportunities

That is, after all, the main point of National Fishing Week: to get more Canadians outdoors and enjoyin

Awesome. Sweet. Dude. Those are the three new words my Dad says he learned during our four days of fishing at northern Saskatchewan’s Milton Lake Lodge (we got back to Ontario on Tuesday). That’s hardly surprising, given we were hanging with Nick Pujic, the hip young principal of Fly Max Films and Fly Nation TV (think surfer culture meets fly fishing), and our guide Naoto Aoki.
Congrats to the winners of the first annual B.C. Loch-Style Fly Fishing Championship, held last Friday and Saturday on Trojan Pond near the town of Logan Lake, B.C. On Lake Ontario the regulation states that for every one angler, you can have two rods. This helps anglers cover various depths and different baits so they can find out what the fish are after on that particular day. This event I used three different baits. My main bait and the one I caught all my fish on was a green pumpkin Slammer made by X Zone Lures (formerly called Strike Zone Tournament Baits). I also employed a 3 1/2 inch green pumpkin tube on a 1/4 ounce jig head and a 3/8 ounce black and blue flipping jig with a black Zoom Big Salty Chunk. I threw the Slammer on 6lb test
Well this trip to Maryland's Chesapeake Bay was much less productive for me than in 2009. The tidal fishery whooped my butt this time around. Once again I fished for smallmouth in the Susquehanna River however it was a different time of year than last year and those big fish just weren't around. After practice I knew this was going to be a brutal event and just catching a limit each day would pro

My answer --- They could charge twice as much and I would still have two on my boat. Everywhere I go I get asked "what are those things sticking up on the back of your boat?" Well they are Power Poles, the next thing you are going to want to add to your rig. Power Poles are a hydraulic shallow water anchor which will silently anchor your boat with the push of a button in depths of 8 feet o
What an interesting Spring we’ve had; bitter cold and endless amounts of rain. It was hard to believe that Trout Opener was just around the corner. The week prior was spent scouting, checking weather, tying roe and going over my gear to ensure that nothing would go wrong on that day. I never thought the thing that went wrong would be the disappearing of fish. I decided to
It's always great when you can fish a tournament with only two rods on the deck and this was one of those times. I was dragging tubes and dropshots in 14-18 ft of water and I was also dropshoting directly below the boat. For the tube I was using a 7' MH Abu Garcia Vendetta Spinning rod paired with a Abu Garcia Soron STX 20 reel with 20lb SpiderWire Stealth braid and a 10lb Trilene 100% Fluor
To me, teaching a man to paint to impress the human eye is great. Teaching a man to create his own lure that will fool a wary fish to strike - is art. There is no question in my mind that tying your own flies or creating and painting your own lures adds a new dynamic to fishing that many of us have never experienced. For angler, blogger and lure creator, Tommy Ellis, it happens all

Day two we had a lot more wind and it was coming out of the east. It had been out of the west for several days and I knew this would change things up on me. When you get a change in wind direction it most often will reposition fish and with smallmouth this can be a move of several miles. Well this day it hadn’t moved all my fish out of that area but there wasn’t the same numbers and t
There was very little wind on day one of the tournament which made the run real nice. But I still had no idea how long it would take me to get back because the river doesn’t get nasty until later in the day when all the boat traffic and big barges come out. So I was hoping to get a good sack early so I could take my time going in and not have to push it. Well the bite wasn’t on fire b
The second Bassmaster event of the year was in Detroit where we launched in the Detroit River with the ability to fish Lake Erie, the Detroit River, Lake St. Clair or the St. Clair River. This tournament I knew would be a huge challenge going in. The last time I fished Lake St. Clair was more than ten years ago. I fished as an amateur in the Canadian Open back when I was 14 years old, which obvio

By LOY MILAM At first, you may be staggered by the vast inventory of brands, styles, sizes and price ranges of rod-and-reels found in any well-stocked tackle store. But buying a reel that will fit your needs and give you dependable service really isn’t that hard. It’s just a
By LOY MILAM With over 20,000 different species of fish known to man (salt and fresh water) and the angling world making great strides over the past decade in the development of more sophisticated equipment and techniques, fishing might seem a very complicated subject to the newcomer. By LOY MILAM I’m convinced that more bass are caught during the period of the spring spawn than at any other time of the year. But I’m also convinced that the more we understand about the different stages of the spawn, the more productive we can be. What fishermen generally call t
Ice fishing for perch can be a challenge as you are limited to fishing down a hole through the ice. You loose the ability to cover huge amounts of water as you can with a boat. While ice fishing, you need to be portable. A portable ice hut such as the otter team wild hut that attaches to a sled allows you to move quickly and store all of your gear. A hand augur is a good choice as
If you have ever been bass fishing at night, the question of how bass locate a bait has probably crossed your mind more than once. It has mine. Not only can a bass detect noisy baits like spinners and gurgling surface baits, but they can also pick up such baits as a solid black plastic worm on nights void of moonlight with apparent ease. How? Vision is extremely poor at b

Having the right equipment for the right fish is everything . Some will say yes the other no . But when you are fishing , having the right equipment will do many things . First of all , if you are going to get those monster fish in lakes or river , you need to be prepare physically , mentally and have the right equipment to catch the fish without hurting the fish and yourself
My father was never what you would call a bass fisherman, but spent most of his time in search of catfish, and his favorite fish, crappie. In fact, the earliest fishing memories I have were spent in the 1950s and 60s with my father crappie fishing from an enclosed, lighted “crappie house” on Buffalo Lake near out hometown of Lubbock, Texas, or trips we took to Possum King
Late February and early March has proven to be the primary time for anglers to catch a trophy bass. All across North America many lakes produce quality bass in the pre-spring, pre-spawn time frame. As the lakes come alive following the winter with the emerging forage, and bass tend to feed to prepare for the spawn. In this season trophies are caught and records have been broken. In
River anglers are always happy to see the temperatures begin dipping as the fall season comes into full swing. On the Cumberland River in southern Kentucky and northern Tennessee this means increased activity in walleye and sauger fishing. Understanding the two species will go a long way to helping you put more of these tasty fish in the live well. The walleye (
It’s funny how terminology plays such an important role in preconceived notions we develop. The initial reaction of most bass fishermen when Float-and-Fly is mentioned is to immediately dismiss it by saying something like, “I don’t fly fish.” Perhaps it is this common misconception that has kept the general population of bass anglers in the dark concerning thi
Reporting from SouthWest Michigan. 2011-2012 Winter has been the warmest winter I have ever seen in my 26 years. All year I've heard about anglers setting up their shanties just to remove them days later from fear of loosing them with the thin amount of ice. Today, Feb 21st, was the first time I saw people on the ice this year. With air temps in the high 30's I don't expect them to be out ther

I recently had the great fortune to acquire a Canyon Coolers 29 quart cube cooler. I had been admiring the Yetis for a couple of years, but the 200-250 dollar price tag for a similar sized cooler kept my purchase at bay and me married. My wife understands good quality, but not at 250 for a small cooler. The Canyon Cooler is beefy, well insulated (keeps ice up to a w
Have you ever wondered why fish just don't bite.. Sometimes you even see the fish right by you lure and for some reason it doesn't look to crazy about you lure. You could either be using the wrong lure or simply.. the fish can see you line. A loop knot will eliminate this and catch you more fish. With fluorocarbon line your lure will be invisible to the fish. Use about 6 inches or even 1-2

Growing up in South Eastern Ontario, on one of the greatest Walleye fisheries in this great country, I have found my second home on the ice. Over the years I have learned different techniques, tips and tricks to land the lunker, that I want to share with you. AREA Let's st
Crappie in the southeast much like most of North America, are active all year round, but there is something about early spring that will compromise the appetite of these amazing fish. The warming of the early spring water temperatures triggers a feeding binge in crappie as their metabolism begins to speed up as the approaching spawn is near. Crappie will s
Where to ice fish in Colorado? The mountains in Colorado have some of the safest ice in the ice. Keeping in mind that no ice is safe ice, is the first step in making sure you have a safe and fun trip fishing instead of a miserable one to the emergency room. Lake John in Northern Colorado has some of the best ice fishing for trophy rainbows in the state right now.
We all love a great fishing story, and when they are about a great fisherman, they are even better. My friend Darren Shell, an established author and story teller, asked me to share this poem with WFN. It is a tribute to yet another great angler of days gone by. " The Ghost of Tony Bean" by: Darren Shell February 2012 By now, most fishing friends and family of Tony
Hi, one and all! So I am completely new to this blogging thing and I wanted to introduce myself and express some of my goals I wish to achieve through this. First of all my name is Joe, I'm 26, have a wife and kid and am more than addicted to all things fishing. I was born and raised in Victoria british columbia area and moved to ontario when I was eleven. I lived near lake Simcoe and fi

My favourite place to fish through the ice is on Lake Clear. This lake is located in Eastern Ontario, Canada, about a 2 hour drive northwest of Ottawa. My main goal is to catch Walleye, but I've caught Lake Trout and Brown Burbot (a.k.a. Ling) as well. I've had the most success at night. The bite times will vary, anywhere from 7pm to 4am, but it's almost always dark when I catc
ice fishing has changed over the years, back in the day hard water fishermen would have his five gallon pail a trusty old hand auger and a spool of line with a hook on the end. times truly have changed. there are many tools and techniques to change ice fishing for the better new technology makes it so that fishermen can catch more fish and have a be
This emerger fly pattern has been very effective for me when I have been fishing for trout with my fly rod. It is not a true dry fly nor is it a true nymph pattern but falls under the emerger category. it represents a caddis or a mayfly which has made it way to the surface and is trying to break free of it's nymphal shuck (outer skin) and hoping to emerge into an insect with win

The Dale Hollow Dam had been completed by 1943 and the lake was filled by the end of 1944. The new lake gave the people of the area new recreation and trade in an area that was once small communities and farms. In the late 1940’s, a man by the name of O. H. (Hoss) Marshall, owned property on the lake and began his business with a small mud boat ramp called Marshall’s Doc
Fishing today on the Lower Niagara River was good today for Niagara River Guide Service. Weather conditions were good with low winds coming from the west and overcast with a few drizzle showers. Water conditions were not quite as good as hoped for but we still netted 18 fish and had 20 at the boat. Today was all Steelhead. Although we had hoped to get onto the Niagara Bar to fish for browns, a go
Hey guys, I had the fishing fever this past Friday, so I went down to a local pond to try my luck. Water clearity was maybe 2 feet, water temp was in the low to mid 50's and the buck bass were cruising the banks. Normally this time of year I start out with what I call a pre-pre spawn pattern witch usually consist of lipless cranks and jigs around deeper structure. Today was no exception, but I ne
Sorry for the poor photo quality on my pics i think i've resolved my problem and will be re-posting my images.
Greetings fellow fishermen and fisherwomen, Another new member to the WFN site. And all the way from a small island in the south pacific. My main fishing activity is from the beach, though I have been known to wander out on a boat from time to time. My fishing gear is limited, I have one custom built one piece pole (I also forget its called a fishing pole in some parts of the w
Still cold here in New England, but we've had it pretty easy so far in central CT. No snow on the ground and thin ice every where so it won't be long now. So, I'm gearing up for late winter/early spring fishing and breaking out the jerk-baits. Late winter, if you can find open water, and early spring, are when I like to throw jerk-baits. The fish seem to really respond to this bait during t
Spent some time getting my gear cleaned up... again... all the reels are cleaned oiled and greased and ready to go just need spring to get here so the bronze backs can tear my gear up for another great season. Being an avid Trout fisherman here in Ontario Canada, I use small ultra light spinning poles to explore all the small trout streams this area has to offer. Many of the streams are tight and narrow with small pools overgrown with vegetation and can be quite challenging to fish. Over the years I’ve learned that the ultra light poles could offer me the finesse that was need to make
Way to go Mikey!! I'm voting everyday for you and Nicholas! Your favourite Fraulein, xo
I was sitting at home today thinking about fishing; as usual, and I got to thinking about a local company that is making stuff for every season. It seems sometimes like companies make a product for a specific season or just one fish, or type of fishing. Not these guys. I am talking about Dynamic Lures. I have been on Pro Staff with them for almost a year, and they just amaze me.

I was going through some the Ambassador posts and was inspired by Rick Clark’s post about taking a trip down memory lane. My Dad grew up in Port Elgin and spent almost all of his spare time on the water and it was a passion he passed onto my sisters and I. Dad taught me how to fish on Rice Lake while visiting my Uncle Bob and Aunt Sandy when I was about 2 or 3. I had a cute little Mickey
I was on shore casting towards the bank of the lake, now I wasn't on a great lake or anything like that but i was behind my house in a stocked lake. this lake is a good fishery and i think its great for everybody from pro anglers to beginners but any way I usually use better lures but over the past few days I have been using the Rapala original floater (Gold).there is a way to work th
every year in June my 2 brothers, my nephews and my son go to Spooner WI for our annual fishing trip, a bonding trip, the last day I was throwing a jointed rapala and landed a nice 4lb Bass, when bringing in the fish jumped and stuck the trebile in my finger, took the Bill Dance hook remover and popped it out, alittle blood little pain, that's fishing
We are currently in a transition period here in Central Florida. Rainy July and August have our lakes up and now with the dew points getting lower in the evenings the water temparture is going down. Fish should be moving from their summer deep water to the shallows very soon. This is the time of year we get schooling bass and it is not uncommon to catch 5 with over 6 lb average in a less than thi

Last long weekend my Boyfriend didn't want to say he got skunked so he caught my flip flop I know it has been a while I've been busy with work and family and haven't had time to sit down and write a blog but I want to know what is going on for Labour Day! For most Labour Day marks the unofficial end of summer. The kids will soon be lugging around school bags instead of tackle boxes and dissectin
Thursday, July 21, 2011 BIRD BANGING BULRUSHES by John McKean Ever adventurous, 26 year old Sandy, a gal-pal of son Sean, ignored my advise to NOT penetrate the bulrushes for better casting position. Had I been even slightly more specific about the 6' black snake that loved to lounge in the cool soft mud therein I wouldn't have felt quite so guilty over the horrific scream, sky high

Hi again, I had a busy day at work, stressful and then I had to do the boring but, very necessary shopping for groceries and other errands. After we finished shopping, my wife seeing that I was stressed out suggested that I take some time and go fishing to relax, decompress and clear my head. Yes, my loving, caring and awesome wife suggested this.... She is so, understanding,
