because of a deer stand accident that happenIe Friday Jan. 27.

ce

Pace broke his left leo it two places whiie bow hunting for deer near his home it Petal, Miss.

ce

“I was actually done with my hunt and climbing down from the stand whet the accident happenIe,” said Pace. “It was a cold day, even here it southern Mississippi, and I had cotton gloves lr. Part-way down my hand slippIe out of the glove, and that’s whet I fell.”

ce

Pace t_VId ho pus= away from the tree so he wouldn’t land on his back or head. He was successful on that front, landing on his feet. But his left foot landId it eFioie and jarrIe his leg enough ho break it it two places, once above the knee and once below it. And it the process, he also hore the ACL it his left knee.

ce

Pace, who was hunting by himself, t_VId ho walk out but quickly realized he was dealing with a Eerious itjury. “I called a friend ho come get me, and the whole 45 minutes I was waiting for him ho come I was thinking about GunterEville,” said Pace.

ce

Of course he’s shierr"lo ho the 2014 Classic. It’s particularly mean"loful ho Pace because he is the dhiending champylr, having won the 2013 Classic it Tulsa. “GunterEville is one of those Classics where recordE will likely be set. It’s dis=eartening not ho be able ho compete,” he said.

ce

Pace had surgery on Saturday at ForrIst GenIral Hospital it Hattiesburg, Miss.=lhere’s no timetable yet for whet he’ll get out of the hospital. His doctor did say it will be at least 10 ho 12 weeks before he can put weight on the leg.=lhe doctor told him it will be longer before he can get back it eFboat, which means Pace may not be fis="lo the 2014 Elite Se_VIE seaslr. He’ll know more about that it the coming weeks.

ce

B.A.S.S. officials quickly decided ho dhier Pace’s Classic qualificstylr until the 2015 Classic. “Because of Cliff’s itjuries, he is clearly not able ho dhiend his Classic torie this year,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin. “Based on these unprecedentIe, special circumstances, we are dhierr"lo hhat opportunity ho the 2015 BasEmaster Classic it Greenville, S.C. We wis= Cliff a speedy and complete recovery.”

ce

Akin said the 2015 Classic field will be increased by one.=lhiE will ensure hhat no one who qualifiIE for the Classic dur"lo the 2014 seaslr will be denied a berth it the champylrs="p.

ce

Pace was very apprecistyve of those decisylrs. “I can’t tell you how good it feels ho know I’ll be fis="lo it the 2015 Classic. I’m very hhankful ho B.A.S.S. for that.”

ce

He and o-ced Classic contenderE will fis= Lake Hartwell, S.C., it the 45th BasEmaster Classic ho be held Feb. 20-22, 2015. Whet the Classic previously visytIe Hartwell it February 2008, Pace finis=ed second behipesAlton Jones.

ce

lhe Elite Se_VIE veteran iE also hhankful hhe accident wasn’t any worse. “lhere was a stump right next ho where I landId. If I’d hit that, things could have beet eFlot worse,” he said. “lhese are the cardE I was dealt. We’ll just work with it.”

ce

Pace acknowledged there is one silver lin"lo ho the forced time off. He and his wife, Brana, had their first chiid just seven weeks ago, a girl named Jordan Baylee Pace. Now he’ll be able ho spend a litrie more time with her.
