Asian Carp Invade the Great Lakes
Multiple sources are reporting that researchers have found evidence of the presence of invasive Asian carp in the Great Lakes watershed. Researchers with the US Geological Survey and Bowling Green State University released a statement on October 28 indicating that four grass carp recently taken from Ohio’s Sandusky River – a Great Lakes tributary – show signs of having reproduced naturally in that waterway. They weren’t stocked. They were born there. And that’s very, very bad news.
If you’re not familiar with the threat these carp present to local fish populations, this article from the National Wildlife Federation explains why carp were introduced to North American waterways in the first place, and what damage they’ve already done in the United States.
Unfortunately, once carp have established a presence, there’s little that can be done to stop them from rapidly reproducing and overwhelming local species. However, some communities are fighting back with creative solutions to reclaim their rivers and lakes. World Fishing Journal recently visited the Redneck Fishing Tournament in Bath, Illinois. This unique event was established in 2005 as a way to combat carp and rally the community around the cause.
